Harry Celebrated 50 years of marriage: 1923-1973

Biography

FamilySearch Person: LK9B-9BT

When Harry F. Steinbach was born on May 21, 1898, in New York, his father, Frank, was 40 and his mother, Katherine, was 35.[1] He was their fifth child and fourth son. His father Frank, sometimes known as Casper, had previously been married to Mary Margareta Sherer but she died in 1888, leaving him to raise their four-year old daughter, Clara, alone.

Harry was a tiny baby having been born prematurely. The story goes that he was so small that his parents made a crib from a cigar box for him to sleep in. His prematurity may explain why Harry wasn’t baptized until January 23, 1899[2] when he was 8 months old. His name is listed as Friedericum on his Christening Record. His parents are recorded as Franz Steinbach and Katharina Koen and the Baptism took place in Buffalo, NY.[3]

The 1905 New York State Census shows Harry and his family living at 357 Bissel Avenue in Buffalo. Frank is a cigar maker. Clara is not shown with the family but she is twenty-one years old and possibly married. George, Harry’s oldest brother is 16 and he is a machinist. Nicholas is 13, William is 12, Charlotte 10, Harry 7, Viola 4 and Albert is 2.[4]

When the 1910 Federal Census was conducted, Harry’s family lived at 86 Box Avenue. Frank C is 52 years old and still a cigar maker. George is 20 and is an upholsterer, Nicholas, 18, is a candy maker, William, 17, is an errand boy, Charlotte listed as Lottie is 15, Harry is 11, Viola is 9, Albert is 7 and Mabel is 3.[5]

Harry registered for the Draft on September 12, 1918[6] and fortunately was never drafted. Just two months later, Kaiser Wilhelm abdicated and Germany signed the armistice in Compiègne, France on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The war officially ended on June 28, 1919, when the Treaty of Versailles was signed.[7]

He married Rose Catherine Rechin on April 26, 1923, in St. Gerard Church, in Buffalo, New York.[8] They had two sons during their marriage.

He worked as a mail carrier in the City of Buffalo. Harry retired on June 30, 1958, after 35 years of service.[9] Harry was a member of the Improved Order of the Red Men, a fraternal order who's motto is “Freedom, Friendship, Charity.”[10]

After retiring, he moved to 1215 Campbell Blvd, in Getzville and spent his time caring for a large garden and helping his son, Bob, with his nursery. His wife sold excess produce at a stand Harry built at the end of their driveway. When driving his green tractor or working in the garden he always wore a striped engineer's cap.

He died on March 31, 1986[11], in a nursing home in Buffalo, New York, at the age of 87, and is buried in the cemetery at St Mary's Catholic Church, Arcade, New York.[12]
