Research Notes

Joseph's marriage is in the register at Keighley St Andrew.[5][6] There is a problem with England Marriages where marriages of other parishes have been indexed to Saxton in Elmet which only has a few marriages yearly. Link to Saxton register, no marriages 1733/1734.[7]

M Baumber in "Revival to Regency" states that Joseph's son John was born about a year after the marriage, presumably the baptism 18 March 1734/1735.[8] He also says that John was running the new mill in 1763, when a deed was executed between father and son to guarantee Joseph's credit. John backed out of this guarantee in 1766 and it was transferred to a John Colville. He quotes deeds AY 572/378 and BG 371/512, then held at the Registry of Deeds, Wakefield.[9] This doesn't seem to agree with the son attached here who was married in America in 1762.

Truthfully, I haven't worked it as much as I should have. I was in contact with the Stell's on genforum.com back in the day. My 3rd ggf was Thomas J. Stell. Another researcher said Joseph was not the son of Alice Ackroyd, who m. Michael, as there were about 3 Michael's in the area at the same time, must be related because they had sons named the same. The baptism record does say 1710 and his father is Michael.

This line is not one I've ever personally researched and is far from a focus for me. I don't know where I got that info, but when filling in lines I don't know much about I do try to check various online sources rather than just relying on something like Ancestry trees. Where ever it came from I do recall reading about the Yorkshire Coiners source and one of the Stells being hung so it was more than simply an online tree that I viewed.

Greg, you had 6 Aug 1706, in my book from Birdie Stell's ( I forgot her name, but her son Al, and I had become good friends online) and Emery Francis's research says he was born in Aug 6, 1705. He was christened in 1710. I'll get it changed in a bit, I also have John Sr born in 1725. And John Jr. born 18 Feb 1743/44 who m. Susannah Malone.

Stell-96 and Stell-33 appear to represent the same person because: Except for the year of birth, they appear to represent the same person. I'm willing to accept your year of birth, because mine is based on his baptism.

Eric by the time I get my entire lines put in, with all the associated collateral families, I'll have the south sown up.

I've heard of German Stells. Seen a few and wondered. I do know that in America it seems that when one Stell (at least in my group) married, all available marriagables married that family also. Thomas J. m. Sarah Hogg, Lots of Stells also m. Hogg/Hogue. When T.J m. Rebecca Cook... lots of others did too. As for Jolly, the family has been around for a long time here.

But you might be interested in this, these are some of Birdie Bell's letters. I thougth her married name was Lauria or similar. https://familysearch.org/patron/v2/TH-904-50306-1029-77/dist.pdf?ctx=ArtCtxPublic&session=USYSCE466EE7E11B49E9D233550FA648A53D_idses-prod02.a.fsglobal.net

I think your or we are looking at a German family. The English Skell's i can place, what has thrown me off is the Jolly connection. If you know the family connections re Virginia, North and South Carolina. from the timreof first settlement, family came first, aliance was forged. The Americas were the new royalty

So we are dealing with a rather large family, who reused names like Granny did tin foil during the war. I haven't seen the Skell name. But I'll take your word for it. I just sent you a PM via WT.

I would rule out Jeremiah Skell for the time being, as (going on Birdie's file as the guide line) the name isn't in the line up of children of John and Jane.

John Stell b. abt 1725 Kneighley??? Not Keighly? Appologies. d. abt 1799 Edgefield Dist South Carolina. Jane Jolly, no data.

John Stell b. 18 Feb 1743/44 d. 27 Dec 1800 near Effington, GA. He would have been old enough for our RW, and for pension, given a land draw in Georgia. Altho that was too early for the land draws.
