Biography

Thomas was born in 1776, the son of Daniel Stephen and Elinor Corlett.[1] He was baptised at Ballaugh, Isle of Man on 21 Jan 1776.

He entered the church and became curate to the Revd Daniel Gelling Rector of Ballaugh (1777 to 1801). On 12 April 1801 he married the Rector's daughter Charlotte, by his wife, the daughter of the Deemster Lace, who is called by Feltham in his 'Tour' (Manx Soc Vol VI) 'the lively Miss G,'. Their marriage took place at Ballaugh. [2] [3]They had a large family, some of whom died young. He became Vicar of Marown in 1819 and Vicar of Patrick in 1827. He was also Vicar General.

He was for several years editor of the 'Manx Advertiser' published by G. Jefferson and was the author of a "Poetical Guide to the Isle of Man" published in 1832, also of a rhapsody in Manx entitled "O! cre ta Gloye?" (Oh! What a Glory") which is considered one of the best pieces in the Manx language.

Buried in the churchyard at Ballaugh. "Next we come to the tombs of the Stephens of whom one, the Rev. Thos., was Vicar-General, his wife being a daughter of the Rev. Daniel Gelling, a rector of the parish. Their son, John, afterwards became Deemster."
