Biography

Cart was born on June 24,1908, at Pine Knot, Whitley County, Kentucky. Pine Knot became part of McCreary County on March 12, 1912. He was the son of Calvin and Minnie ( Davis ) Stephens. He married Etchel Foster on September 28, 1935 in Scott County. He passed away at ST. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee on February 22, 1986.

Cart Stephens, 77, of the Big Springs community, passed away Saturday morning, February 22, 1986, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville. Mr. Stephens was the son of the late Calvin Stephens and the late Minnie Davis Stephens and was also preceded in death by one sister, Truie Letner; and one brother, Herbert Stephens. He was a member of the Helenwood Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Etchel Foster Stephens of the Big Springs community; a special niece, who they raised, Mrs. Royce (Linda) Caudill of Franklin, Ky.; three sisters: Lula King and Mrs. Albert (Lola) Phillips of Helenwood, and Flora Sexton of Oneida; five brothers: Claude Stephens of Georgia, Fred Stephens of Helenwood, Dewey Stephens of the Big Springs community, and Elmer and Roy Stephens, both of Helenwood. Several nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at the Helenwood Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 25, with Rev. Roger Cecil, Rev. Floyd Terry, and Rev. Milford Cecil officiating. The Goad Family sang. Burial followed in the Daniel Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Benny Jones, Curley Sexton, Donald R. Stephens, Ray Sexton, Ronald Stephens, and Ronnie Stephens. West-Murley Funeral Home in Oneida was in charge of the arrangements. (Source: The Scott County News, 27 Feb 1986, p12)
