Biography

Janet, known virtually by everyone as Jeannette, spent her entire life telling the story that the doctor got her name wrong at birth. As the story goes, the doctor was called to the Stephens home, which was located out of town in an area known today as Schoenbrunn. As Adaline Stephens was ready to bring new life into the world, the doctor, an avid hunter, decided to do a little rabbit hunting as he traveled through the countryside. Losing track of time the Doc failed to arrive before the birth and then further messed up by recording the baby’s name incorrectly as he continued to be distracted by the good hunting he had experienced.

When Janet sought employment she was advised that a Social Security card was required so her went to the local Social Security Office and applied. Filling out the form with Jeannette as her given name she was questioned about the name on the birth certificate. Jeannette scratched out the name "Janet" and wrote in "Jeannette" ( I possess that birth certificate). The clerk accepted her explanation and that's how Janet became Jeannette.

It wasn't until I became interested in learning more about our family history and sending to the State for both my parents birth certificates did all this come to light.
