Andrew Young Stephens was born 22 Aug 1846 in Neosha, Newton, Missouri and died on 13 Feb 1917 in Bexar County, Texas. He is buried in the San Fernando Cemetery #3 in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas; His plot is in Section 8.[1]
in the 1880 Census, Andrew is found in Frio, Texas, District 59, with wife: Sarah A (F-28), daughter Sarah (F-11), daughter Cora T. (F-9), daughter Mary A. (F-6), and mother Jane (F-62).[2] Jane shows to be married and not widowed leaving us to think Thomas was still alive at the time of this census.
The 1900 Census shows Thomas with 2nd wife, Paralee (then 38), along with son: John T.(born Oct 1894), daughter Elizabeth J. (born Oct 1987), daughter Maud (born April 1899), and daughter Cora (born Dec 1871). The record shows the family to have lived in the area of Pct. 2, San Saba County, Texas.[3]
In 1910 the census records show the family in Pct. 5, Bandera, Texas and includes: Andrew, Paralee, John T., Elizabeth J, and the first appearance of daughter Berta M. (F-9), daughter Annie (F-7), and Cora still lived in the household as well (then 38).[4]
In the 1921 San Antonio Directory: Paralee Stephens is listed as living at 602 West 19th Street, San Antonio, Texas, and is listed as (Wid AY) indicating Andrew was no longer living at that time[5]
I've reviewed the death certificate of Andrew Y. Stevens of Bexar County, Texas, listing Tom Stevens (MO) and Jane Hoover (MO) as parents. His date of death indicates 13 Feb 1917. The name of the mother and father and the birthplaces of each are about as accurate as these things tend to be. The findagrave also seems to be properly linked with Stephens spelled properly and the place of birth correctly listed. [6][7] here's where things get strange: The 1920 Census shows Andrey Y Stephens alive and living, 3ish years after his alleged death, as Head of Household, along with wife "Pearline", son John (24), daughter "May"[Bertha M. (19)], daughter Anna Lee (17), and daughter Cora (48). The family is listed in San Antonio, Ward 2, District 0041, Bexar County, Texas. This is clearly the same family.[8][9]
