Biography

Descendant 66 in Stephens-Stevens genealogy 1668 – 1909, by Plowdon Stevens, p.75 which tells us the following.

m. 11/24/1785 Olive Franklin, Daughter of Lieut. Roswell and Jerusha (Hicock) Franklin, b. Woodbury CT, 5/7/1766, whose mother and brother were killed by the Indians at Wyoming. [1]

Bought land in Chemung, Ontario Co. Lived at what is now Elmira, but in 1790 was one of the 12 proprietors of “old Canisteo Castle,” and he had lot No. 6 of Canisteo and and #7 of Hornellsville assigned to him, likely done by lottery with the other 11 founders.

1822, built the mill known as Stephens Mills on Bennetts Creek in Hornellsville, NY.

1809-1812 – Canisteo Town Clerk.

Military: 1796, Captain of Militia Company; 1803, 1st Major; 1806, Lieutenant Colonel in command of a regiment;

Member of the old school Presbyterian Church.

10 Children: Cynthia Stephens, married Ezra Stephens^ (Her 4th cousin once removed); Franklin, who drowned; Uriah F.; Phineas, married Hila Stephens ^(his 5th cousin once removed); Elias; John H.; Alexander H.; Frederick; Daniel McHenry; and Pamelia who married Samuel Olin, MD.[2]

^Hila and Ezra are 1st Cousins.

John was born in 1766. He passed away in 1837.

Stephens-9736 and Stephens-8506 appear to represent the same person because: Not sure why this was rejected as a match. Both are sourced from Plowden Stevens Genealogy - Descendant 66, page 75.

And the birth and death dates, parents, etc all match.
