Samuel Stephenson was the youngest of five children born to Robert Stephenson and Jane Barron. He was born in December 1795 near the village of Sharon in York County,South Carolina. [1].
Samuel Stephenson's father Robert Stephenson died intestate in 1798 in York County,South Carolina. All of Robert Stephenson's children were minors and had to have guardians. The court appointed Samuel's step-father James Hope as his guardian on April 6,1801. On August 6,1810 his older brother John Stephenson became Samuel's guardian. Samuel deeded away his inheritance on December 5,1816 and followed his relatives to Giles County,Tennesse.[2].
Samuel Stephenson appears on the 1820 Census of Giles County,Tennessee as Samuel "Stevenson." Note: Samuel Stephenson's Uncle Alexander Barron Sr. and George Shields appear as neighbors on the 1800 Census of Pendleton County,South Carolina. About 1810,They left Pendleton County,South Carolina and went to Giles County,Tennessee. The names Alexander Barron Sr. andGeorge Shields appear on a land deed in 1812. The name Robert Stephenson appears as a witness to this deed.I believe this Robert Stephenson was Samuel's brother. All of Samuel's siblings except John Stephenson went to Giles County,Tennessee. I have no proof but I believe [[Shields-2901|George Shields was the father of Samuel's wife Mary Shields.
