Biography

George Stephenson was born about 1800 in St. John Lee, Northumberland, the son of Edward Stephenson. He married Ann Sowler, 7 Jul 1820 in Simonburn, Northumberland. They had six children. Ann died 31 Mar 1832, in Chollerton, Northumberland, shortly after the birth of their youngest child Joseph Oxley Stephenson. After Ann's death George married Dorothy Sowler, 24 Mar 1851 in Chollerton.

George Stephenson & Dorothy Sowler
Dorothy although sharing the same surname as George's first wife, Ann does not appear to be related to her. George had a further six children with Dorothy. Dorothy is a widow on the 1871 Census so it can be assumed that George died between the 7 Apr 1861 and 2 Apr 1871. The 1861 census shows George, a retired butcher living at Liddell Hall, Colwell with Dorothy and four of their children.
