Mary Jane Sternbeck was born on 11 May 1859 in MacDonald River, New South Wales, Australia as the eighth child of George Christian Sternbeck and Jane Sophia Thompson. She had eight siblings, namely: George, Sarah, Jane, William Matthew, James, Matthew Thompson, Elizabeth, and Isabella Ann. She died on 19 Apr 1920 in Katoomba, New South Wales, Australia. When she was 16, she married George Goldsmith, son of John Goldsmith and Elizabeth Bridge, in 1876 in Wollombi, New South Wales, Australia.
