OBITUARY (Fairview Republican, Fairview Oklahoma, July 8, 1910)
Died – At Kansas City, Kansas, July 2nd, Margaret E. Scates, wife of W. J. Scates of Granton Okla,. age 30 years and 5 months. Into this union four children were born all of whom survive her. The deceased was born in Ellsworth Co. Kansas in 1886. Came with her parents to Oklahoma in 1895, where she resided until called home. She became a Christian in her 17th year, and was faithful until meets death. Her life was a beautiful example of Christian love to know her was to love her and she will be long missed in the community in which she lived. She left a husband and four children, a father, three brothers and two sisters to mourn her loss. The funeral was held in the Christian Church, at Fairview, Sunday, July 3rd, conducted by Rev. Judd assisted by Rev. Green, Pastor of the M. E. Church after which the remains were laid to rest in the Fairview Cemetery.
Notes: 1) Margaret was born in 1880 (not 1886). 2) Her grave marker gives the date of her passing as 1 Jul 1910. 3) It was over 350 miles distance from Kansas City to Fairview, so it is likely that the actual date of her passing was on 1 Jul 1910 as stated on the grave marker. 4) M. E. is Methodist Episcopal. Her father, Edward, was a preacher in the Methodist Church and the Baptist Church, Her grandfather Levi Sternberg was a Lutheran and then Presbyterian minister.
