Biography

Birth

Samuel Stetson, Jr. was born Dec. 30, 1713 [1][2], eldest son of Samuel Stetson and Desire Dunham, [3][4]. both descendants of early colonial New England families. [A]

Marriage

His marriage to Anna Dimmock [B], took place June 17,1742 [3][5]Their first child lived only one day; two more children lived to survive their father, both born in Mansfield, Connecticut[6].

Military Service

In 1750, the General Assembly confirmed him Ensign of the second company or train band in the Mansfield Company, Fifth regiment of the colony [4].

Public Life

  • Active in town as well as church affairs, he served as selectman for a total of eight years.
  • Samuel Jr., also participated in church activities, serving on committees: to sell the old meeting house "to the best advantage for ye Society"; to raise money, "to colour a new the meeting house"; and in 1779, to take in subscriptions for an addition to Rev. Salter's salary. He paid for and occupied pew number 5 in the meetinghouse, sharing it with Captain Nathaniel Hall.
  • He represented Mansfield at the General Assembly for the sessions October 1766, January and October 1767, October 1768, January 1769. During the Revolution, he was on various committees to procure camp equipage supplies for soldiers families. His only son, Timothy, enlisted as a private in the Connecticut militia in 1778 and was engaged at Providence, Rhode Island. In April 1758 Samuel Stetson and Solomon Abbe of Windham gave land to the inhabitants of the town of Mansfield "in consideration of ye common Necessity and usefulness of an open and publick Highway, in sdTown of Mansfield crossing our Lands and Leading from a highway in sd Windham laid to ye town line and thence Extending by or near the sd Stetson's dwelling house..." Samuel's land holdings were quite extensive.

Death

At the time of his death, May 13, 1782, his "farm land" containing 400 acres, with house and barn, was valued at 1400 pounds. His entire estate was appraised by Jonathan Nichols at a total value of 2329 pounds. The principal piece of land, with his dwelling house on the northerly side of a highway leading from the bridge called "Stetson's Bridge" over the Natchaug River, was left to his wife. Timothy received 100 acres with a dwelling house on the banks of the Natchaug River, and the remaining 30 acres were left to Desire Stetson Southworth, Samuel's only daughter.
