Biography

Nina was born in a home built by her father, Hyrum Stevens. The old home is gone now.. in Mount Carmel, Utah. Hyrum Wallace Stevens and Mabel May Spencer Stevens had 11 children, and Nina was the middle child. She had Grandfathers and Great Grandfathers on both sides who were very involved in the United Order Community in Orderville. At the time of her birth, there was no electricity yet, or cars. Light was provided by kerosene lanterns and candles; transportation provided by horses or horse and buggy (or sleigh). As she grew up, she helped milk cows collect eggs, and take lunches out to her brothers tending the cows in the back 40. She liked to "borrow" her older brothers overalls to ride the horse out to the grazing area, with a guilty pleasure. Shoes would come off at the end of the school year, and stay off until school started in the fall. She told many stories; of hobos sipping the cream from the pans on the porch; jumping in the irrigation ditch to cool off; taking a half a day to take horse and buggy into Kanab, traveling down the creek bed and watching out for the quicksand; collecting little star shaped fossils that were tiny vertebrae; hiding out on the hillside from the Traveling Dentist; and horse drawn sleigh as her first school bus.

This is my mother. Nina brought myself and 5 siblings into this world, and Boyce and I held her hand and sang to her with a circle of family when she died. She was married to our dad Claude Black, they had 6 children.

It was a long time before returning. 1937 Glendale, Kane County, Utah, USA. One more big move, all the way to Washington state. Here Dad helped his brother Clell run a gas and auto repair station in Husum, and their first home was a tiny picker cabin in Bingen, with 5 kids. Mom worked at the White House Cafe for awhile. 1950 Bingen, Klickitat, Washington, USA. Nina and Claude had moved to Cedar City from Springville, and Boyce was born.. Soon they moved on to Idaho for work, staying in Caldwell, and I think Mountain Home. 1944 Cedar City, Iron, Utah, USA. Claude worked here for awhile in the orchards, and their first son Sheldon was born in Mecca. They went back to Utah when his dad Alvin was injured in a farming accident. Dad (Claude) saw a vision of the accident when it happened, and called home... Jun 1936. Mecca, Riverside, California, USA. The family lived here when Roger was born. Claude moved them a lot chasing work during the depression. He worked on many road construction jobs, drove and mechanic on the big machinery. 1942 Springville, Utah, Utah, United States.
