Biography

Mr. Abraham Stevens and Miss Nancy Aycock were married 11 Nov 1826 in Wilkinson, Georgia.[1]

In 1830 he was living in Wilkinson, Georgia.[2] The household included 2 males age 15 to 19, 1 male 20 to 29, 1 female 10 to 14, 1 male slave 10 to 23 and 1 male slave 36 to 54.

In 1840 he was living in District 331, Wilkinson, Georgia.[3] The household included 1 male under 5 (Abraham), 2 males 5 to 9 (A Joel, John Benjamin), 1 male 20 to 29 (Abram), 1 male 40 to 49, 2 females under 5 (Rachel, ?), 1 female 5 to 9 (Elizabeth), 1 female 20 to 29 (Nancy) and 1 female 60 to 69. Two persons were employed in agriculture. One person was blind. Four persons over age 20 could not read and write. All 11 people in the household were free white persons.

His wife Nancy died before 1850, most likely around 1843 with the birth of daughter Sarah.

In 1850 he was living in Walker, Alabama.[4] The household included Abraham Stephens 48, Joel A Stephens 18, Elizabeth T Stephens 16, Abraham D Stephens 12, Rachel C Stephens 10 and Sarah F Stephens 7. All were born in Georgia except Abraham born in North Carolina. Abraham and Joel were farmers.

He married second Elizabeth Margaret Busby (or Buzbee or Busbee), probably around 1854 in Alabama.

On 25 Jun 1856 he was appointed postmaster in Democrat, Walker, Alabama.[5]

In 1860 he was living in Woods Precinct, Jefferson, Alabama.[6] The household included Abraham Stevens 58, Elizabeth M Stevens 31, Rachel C Stevens 20, Visa C Stevens 5, Resean A Stevens 4, Wm C L Stevens 3, and Austin H Stevens 1. Abraham was born in North Carolina, Rachel in Georgia and the rest in Alabama. Abraham was a Baptist clergyman.

Research Notes

Previous note:

I am guessing that James is Elizabeth Stevens' father's name because Elizabeth and P. H. named their first son James Andrew. P. H.'s father is Andrew, so it is reasonable to assume they gave the name of Elizabeth's father as the other name.
Also, P. H. and Elizabeth's first Child was Sarah Jane, so perhaps Elizabeth's mother was Jane since P. H.'s mother is Sarah. BH

The grave memorial 9052053 for Louisa Elizabeth Caroline Buzbee Stevens appears to be conflating Elizabeth the second wife of Abraham Stevens (mother of children noted above) and the wife of Abraham's son Abraham Daniel. Not surprising given the difference in ages and similarity in names (Elizabeth Caroline and Louisa Eliza), both of them Busby (or Buzbee). She looks ok, the problem is just the connection to her step son Abraham Daniel as husband. But then the children have the wrong father?

The grave memorial for John Benjamin identifies his siblings as Joel Adam, Elizabeth, Abraham Daniel, Rachel and Sarah. And his half siblings as Vicie, Roseann, William Columbus Lafayette and Austin Hollis.

According to her grave memorial, Lucinda Caroline Elizabeth Busbee was the daughter of William Busbee and Elizabeth Key. She was the wife of Adam Joel Stevens. She may have also been the sister of Abraham's second wife Elizabeth. The 1850 census is difficult to read and the family may have been indexed as Bustin, Bu?tia, or Busby.[9] They were living in Walker, Alabama and the household included William 48, Elizabeth 47, Elizabeth 21, William 20, Husten 17, Carline 14, Marten 12, Luiza 10, Tibs 9, Milenday 9, Maradeth 5, Maryan 3 and Joshua 2. All were born in Alabama. From this is it possible that Elizabeth, born 1829 was the second wife of Abram Stevens; Carline born 1836 is Lucinda Caroline wife of Adam Joel Stevens (and daughter-in-law of Abram); Luiza born 1840 is Louisa Eliza wife of Abraham Daniel Stevens (and daughter-in-law of Abram)? It looks likely.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Abraham by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Abraham:
