Biography

Roy W. was born about 1882 in Wisconsin, the son of Frank and Weatha Stevens.

By 1896, the Stevens family lived in California. On 18 June 1986, Roy’s father, Frank W. Stevens registered to vote in Cerritos, LA County, CA. He was 43, born in Wisconsin, about 1853. [1]

In 1900, the Stevens family lived on Atlantic Avenue, Long Beach, California. The household included Frank W. Stevens, 47, born Wisconsin, a real estate agent who owned their house without a mortgage; his wife of 20 years, Wealtha, 43, b. Wisconsin, who had had four children, all living; their four children, Roy W., 18, b. WI; Edward R., 15, b. WI, in school; Mary E., 11, b. Washington, in school; and Ruth, 3, b. CA. All could read and write, except the youngest, Ruth. [2]

Roy married Lillian A. In 1910, they lived in Long Beach, California. Roy was 28, born in Wisconsin, a house carpenter, who rented their house. Roy’s parents were b. WI. Roy had been out of work for nine weeks in 1909. Lillian was 21, born in Iowa. Her father was b. Maine, and her mother was b. WI. Both Lillian and Roy could read and write. They had been married two years. It was Roy’s second, and Lillian’s first marriage. They had had no children. [3]

Roy Wesley Stevens, 34, married Olive E. Donner, 33, on 30 June 1916 in Long Beach, California. They were both previously divorced. It was Roy’s third, and Olive’s second marriage. Carl U. Hawkins, Police Judge, City of Long Beach, officiated. Witnesses were Jill McCabe, 127 E. 4th, Long Beach, and Robert C. Bulchin, of Los Angeles. Olive was born about 1883 in Iowa, the daughter of (Emerson) J. Donner, b. Ohio, and Sarah T. (Du Bell), b. IA. Olive was a milliner, living in Long Beach. Roy was born about 1882 in Wisconsin, the son of Frank W. Stevens and Weatha Mathewson, both b. WI. He was an engineer, living in Long Beach. [4]

Curiously, Olive and Roy married again, about a year later. They were living apart at the time:

Olive, 35, married Roy, 36, on 16 July 1917 in Santa Ana, Orange, California. Roy was a gas engineer, living at 28 Parker Ave, Long Beach, CA. Olive Endorix Donner lived at 1643 E. 53rd St., LA. She was born in Iowa, the daughter of Emerson J. Donner, b. Ohio, and Sina (Sarah) T. Du Bell, b. Iowa. Olive’s mother, a Los Angeles resident, witnessed and John B. Cox, Santa Ana Justice of the Peace, officiated. Roy and Olive were both divorced. This was his third, and Olive’s second marriage. [5]

  • Roy later married Katheryn (1903-1973).

In 1940, the Stevens family lived at 1906 139th St., Compton, California. The household included Roy Stevens, 58, born in Wisconsin, who rented their house for $20 per month. Roy was a painter in the building construction industry, who had been out of work for all of 1939. He did have an outside income of some kind. Roy had completed four years of high school; his wife Katheryn, 36, b. CA, unemployed, who had completed the 8th grade; and four daughters, all b. CA, Lois, 16, who had completed one year of high school; Virginia, 10, had completed 3rd grade; Bertha, 4; and Arlene, 2. The family had lived in Long Beach, CA in 1935. [6]

Roy Wesley Stevens was born 22 March 1882 in Wisconsin, the son of Stevens and Mathewson. He died, the day after his 74th birthday in Riverside County, California. [7]

  • Roy is buried, with his wife Katheryn E., near his parents in Long Beach Municipal Cemetery, Long Beach, California. [8]
