AMOS STEVENS, b. at Andover, 22 Feb 1742/3[1] son of Ebenezer Stevens and Johanna Farnum; d. at Andover, 1 Aug 1812;[2] m. 1st at Andover, 25 Sep 1764,[3] his second cousin once removed, SARAH STEVENS, b. at Andover, 19 Mar 1743/4[4] daughter of Isaac and Mary (Barker) Stevens;[5] Sarah d. at Andover, 21 Jan 1788.[6] Amos m. 2nd at Andover, 5 Oct 1789, LYDIA BROWN; Lydia d. at Andover, 12 Feb 1815.
Amos was a farmer in Andover. He is likely the Amos Stevens of Andover with service during the Revolution in 1775. He marched at the alarm on 19 April 1775 in the company of Capt. Thomas Poor in Col. Frye’s regiment. He was later in the company of Capt. Farnum in the regiment of Col. James Frye. He was one of those receiving reimbursement for losses sustained at battles of Lexington and Bunker Hill.[7]
Amos Stevens did not leave a will and his estate entered probate 7 August 1812 with Abijah Fuller as administrator at the request of widow Lydia. Real estate was valued at $2,671 and personal estate at $617.05. Debts were $2,934.65. The dower was set off to the widow on 2 November 1812.[8]
Daughter Sarah did not marry. In her will written 10 December 1833 (probate 7 January 1834), she bequeathed to her brother Amos her right in the Andover social library and to his wife Susanna she bequeathed ten dollars. To brother Phineas Stevens, she left four hundred dollars to be used for the benefit of their sister Rhoda Brown, and any amount left after the decease of Rhoda would be equally divided among Phineas’s children. Rebecca, wife of brother Phineas, receives ten dollars and one-half of the wearing apparel. Niece Sarah Underwood[9] receives the use of fifty dollars and bed and bedding, and these to go to Sarah’s children after her decease. Her nieces, children of brothers Amos and Phineas, receive the remainder of the estate to be equally divided. Deacon William Frost was named executor. Personal estate was $1,097.65. There was no real estate.[10]
