Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Elizabeth (Hussey) Travers was a Virginia colonist.

Elizabeth was born about 1632 in England. Her parents are at this time unconfirmed and need researching. No record has been found for her arrival in Virginia Colony.

Elizabeth's first husband, Thomas Stephens, recorded a patent of 600 acres in Lancaster County, N. W side of Moraticon, on the 12th of February 1652. This was for transport of 12 persons including "Eight Negros: Tho. Mount Stevens, Mary West, Anne Downing, Holliday Chessee. [Was Tho. Mount Stevens the full name of Elizabeth's husband? Does this represent land received by him for his own transport?] [1]

On the 8th of March 1669, Raleigh Travers (2nd husband) and Elizabeth deed to John Chynn of Lancaster a quarter right in Traver's Mill lying in Morattico. To confirm Elizabeth's agreement to transfer her rights in the mill:

  • I, Elizabeth Travers for good cause appoint MY COUZEN, Mr. Will. Travers to be my lawful attorney and in my name and stead to acknowledge to John Chinn the quarter right of the mill lying on Morritico as my voluntary and willing act to the deed of my husband. [2]

Marriages & Children

Elizabeth was married six times and had six known children with her first two husbands.

  1. Thomas Stephens (bef.1617-bef.1654) about 1650 in Lancaster County, Virginia. Stephens died intestate before the 17th of November 1654 in Lancaster County, the date Elizabeth was granted Administration of his estate. [3][4] They had one known child:

  2. Raleigh Travers (abt.1622-bef.1670) about 1655 in Lancaster County, Virginia. [3] Travers died before the 14th of December 1670 when his widow Eliz. Travers was awarded Administration of his estate in Lancaster County, Virginia. [4] They had five known children (birth dates estimated):
    1. John Travers (abt.1656-aft.1705)

Elizabeth for the Administration on the estate of her late husband Raleigh Travers, and Robert Beckingham and John Chyn (Chinn) gave bond for the Administration on the 31st of December 1672. [5] Elizabeth and Robert had no known children. Beckingham died before the 8th of March 1675/76 in Lancaster County and probate was granted to Mrs. Elizabeth Beckingham, widow and relict. [5][3]
    1. On the 2nd of May 1671 Robert Beckingham purchased 1625 acres in Stafford County from William Harris. Elizabeth apparently inherited this land when Beckingham died in 1675/76. On the 22nd of February 1691 Elizabeth sold 625 acres to son Giles Travers for 20,000 pounds of tobacco. He later bequeathed this land to daughter Million (Travers) Waugh and her husband Joseph Waugh. [6]
  4. Thomas Wilkes about 1677 in Lancaster County, Virginia. Wilkes died before the 11th of November 1685 in Lancaster County. They had no known children.[3]

Death

No will has been found for Elizabeth and her exact death date is unknown. She was last found in records on the 7th of March 1697 in Richmond County when she acknowledged a sale to William Draper and appointed Joseph Tayloe her attorney. She was deceased by the 11th of May 1698 when her husband William Mann stated in a court proceeding that in reply to a complaint against him "as marrying Elizabeth Spencer, ... he cannot take himselfe to be any ways concerned with her Complaint, the estate of Mrs. Spencer as well as all other of the deceased being fully vested in their Executors ...."[5]

Notes on Children

The wills of Elizabeth's daughter Elizabeth (Travers) Wormeley and husband George Spencer help us in recognizing children and family relationships. [5]

Research Notes

Elizabeth is estimated to have been born about 1632 based on the following:

  • 1st marriage to Thomas Stephens about 1650 at estimated age 18; he died 17 Nov 1654, Lancaster Co., Virginia
  • Daughter Mary Stephens born about 1651 and married Giles Cole about 1669 at estimated age 18, their oldest child born c 1670.

Elizabeth could not realistically be the daughter of James Hussey and Mary Cole, both were born well over 50 years before Elizabeth is estimated to have been born. They are being removed as her parents. (Strutton-11 19:03, 28 May 2022 (UTC))

Elizabeth's maiden name is not known.

This passage has been the subject of varying interpretations. Many researchers translate "My Couzen" as "son" and attribute to Elizabeth a son William whom she never had. Boddie in Historical Southern Families reads it as "nephew."[2] This would be William Travers, son of Raleigh's reputed brother William Travers. However, best information gives a birth date for William's son of about 1660, way too young to be given power of attorney in 1669. Another reading, which appears preferable, is "stepson" William Travers, born about 1644, son of Raleigh and his first, unknown, wife. William testified in court proceeding in 1692 that he was "aged 48," born 1644. [8] [9]

No marriage records have yet been located. Her marriages are supported using other documentation such as wills, deeds, court orders, etc.

Stevens-4029 and Hussey-6 appear to represent the same person because: Same husband. Sketchy data in Stevens-4029, Hussey-6 bio describes Elizabeth's life in some detail. I adopted the Stevens-4029 profile so am not the creator, and happily yield to the excellent profile Hussey-6.
