"(Deacon) ABRAHAM POST ... married at Saybrook, 7 April 1692, Elizabeth STEVENS, who died in 1755 (see probate below). Although her identity is not certain, it seems probable that she was the Elizabeth Stevens born at Killingworth, 14 July 1668, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Fletcher) Stevens, who shared in the distribution of her father's estate before her marriage. If such is the case, Elizabeth, wife of Nathaniel Chittenden, has been incorrectly identified in the printed genealogical literature (see Claude Willis Barlow, John Steevens of Guilford, Connecticut [Rochester, N.Y., 1976])." [1]
"Elizabeth Post, in her will dated 14 August 1755, gives movable
goods to daughters Elizabeth Buell, Mary Haze and Mindwell Stannard,
and names son-in-law Daniel Buell executor. On 25 December 1755, William and Mary Hays and Josiah and Mindwell Stannard gave a quitclaim
to Daniel Buell."[2]
Research Notes
There are sources that seem to indicate that Mary Stephens/Stevens, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Fletcher) Stevens married Abraham Post and Nathaniel Chittenden Jr. at about the same time and had children with both. Since that is not possible, it seems likely that there were two Elizabeths from different families. This has apparently been a problem for decades and still requires disambiguation.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Elizabeth by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Elizabeth:
Also, the birth dates of the Chittenden children and the Post children make it plain that they could not have been born to the same woman -- not unless she was a bigamist.
April Dauenhauer: I agree that Nathaniel Chittenden did not marry Elizabeth Stevens Post. He did marry Elizabeth Stevens, daughter of Thomas Stevens and Mary Fletcher Stevens. I do not know how Elizabeth Stevens Chittenden became hopelessly confused with Elizabeth Stevens Post. Talcott's "Chittenden Family: William Chittenden of Guilford, Conn. and His Descendants" never mentions an Elizabeth Post. However, Elizabeth Stevens Post is listed as Nathaniel Chittenden's wife on almost all the internet genealogy sites. Post's descendants have become intermixed with Chittenden descendants on these sites to a degree that is daunting. But Elizabeth Stevens Chittenden and Elizabeth Stevens Post are not the same person. Elizabeth Chittenden died in 1738, and Elizabeth Stevens Post d. 1755.
Nathaniel Chittenden Jr. probably didn't marry Elizabeth (Stevens) Post.
She was born 1668 at Killingworth, and married Abraham Post in 1692. He died in 1647, nameing her in his will, and her will is dated 14 Aug 1755.
Since Nathaniel Chittenden, Jr. died in 1738, she would not be able to be married to him after the death of Abraham Post, and she could not have married Abraham Post if she married Nathaniel first.
Mr. Michael Rudy, author of The Colonial Post Family of Saybrook and Hebron, Connecticut: Abraham Post (2) and his Descendants (NEHGR 146:113-223), suggests that Alvan Talcott, "Chittenden Family: William Chittenden of Guilford, Conn. and His Descendants," may have erred matching Elizabeth Stevens to Nathaniel as his wife.
UNKNOWN-17834 and Stevens-4854 appear to represent the same person because: Stevens is the last name at birth - please merge Unknown-17834 into Stevens-4854 so the final ID is Stevens-4854. Thank you. April Dauenhauer
