Biography

SARAH STEVENS, b. at Roxbury, 11 Mar 1719 daughter of Samuel and Mary (Calef) Stevens; m. at Roxbury, 23 Oct 1746,[1] as his third wife, Nathaniel Seaver, b. at Roxbury, 22 Dec 1697 son of John and Sarah (Gardner) Seaver; Nathaniel d. at Brookline, 2 Oct 1768. Nathaniel was first married to Hannah White and second married to Elizabeth Craft.

Sarah and Nathaniel resided in Brookline where Nathaniel served as selectman in 1738.[2] On 12 February 1753, Nathaniel Seaver quitclaimed to his brother Andrew Seaver his interest in the estate of their honored father John Seaver.[3]

In his will written 7 September 1768 (probate 18 November 1768), Nathaniel Seaver bequeathed to beloved wife Sarah the use and improvement of one-third part of the whole estate and she is named sole executrix. Son Abijah receives £73.6.8; daughter Hannah Goddard, £43.6.8; daughter Lucy Mirriam, £13.6.8; daughter Mary, £80; daughter Elizabeth, £80; daughter Susanna, £80; and youngest son Nathaniel receives the whole of the estate except the one-third for Sarah during her life. Son Nathaniel is to pay the debts. Son Nathaniel is also to pay the following legacies: to brother Abijah ten pounds left to him by his grandfather White and £73.6.8; to sister Sarah Gardner the sum of ten pounds left to her by her grandfather White, and Sarah receives no more as she received her full portion at the time of her marriage; to sister Hannah Goddard the ten pounds from grandfather White and £43.6.8; to sister Lucy Mirriam the ten pounds from grandfather White and £13.6.8; and the legacies of £80 pounds to his sisters Mary, Elizabeth, and Susanna. The dower was set off to the widow on 3 September 1794.[4]

Daughter Susanna did not marry, and her estate entered probate 20 May 1828 with two of the heirs requesting that Robert W. Trevett be named administrator. The heirs identified were Nathaniel S. Warner of Greenup, KY, trader, a nephew; Edward Seaver of Boston, non compos mentis, a nephew; Susanna Trevett wife of Robert W. Trevett, of Lynn, niece; and Ann B. Jenney wife of Isaac Jenney of Boston, niece. Estate inventory was $116.88 and notes were owed to the estate. After expenses and collecting some of the owed amounts and selling the personal estate, $320 was available for distribution to heirs. Eighty dollars each was distributed to Nathaniel Warner, Susanna Trevett, Ann Janney, and Edward Seaver.[5]

Son Nathaniel was involved in land transactions with his mother and sister Susanna. On 3 April 1773, Nathaniel Seaver of Brookline, trader, with widow Sarah Seaver providing collateral, entered into an indenture/mortgage agreement with Mary Boylston, spinster of Brookline, involving a 75-acre property with dwelling house in Brookline with Nathaniel’s indebtedness to Mary Boylston being £600. On 1 July 1773, Nathaniel Seaver, trader of Boston, with widow Sarah Seaver relinquishing her right of dower, conveyed to Ebenezer Craft of Roxbury ten acres in Brookline for payment of £26. On 5 June 1787, Nathaniel Seaver, trader of Boston, conveyed to Susanna Seaver, spinster of Boston, for payment of £30 a tract of land in Brookline of 1 ¾ acres.[6]
