Biography

William Stevens AKA Stephens

Origin

William was born September 1, 1616 in Caversham, Oxfordshire, England.[citation needed] He was a son of John Stevens and Alice Atkins.[1]

Immigration

William "Stephens" of "Caversham, Oxon," husbandman, 21 years old, immigrated in 1638 aboard the Confidence.[2]

Family

William married at Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts, as his 1st, and as his 1st, to Elizabeth Bitfield.[3] The entry for William Stevens' marriage to Elizabeth in Vital Records of Newbury, Massachusetts to 1849 indicates that both her maiden name and the year of their marriage were unreadable in the original records, but notes that a later town copy of those records says that they were married 19 March 1645[/6?].[4] However, since, based on her baptism in March 1628/9, Elizabeth would have only been 17 at the time, and since William and Elizåbeth's first known child (Bitfield Stevens) was not born until March 1648/9, it is reasonably likely the 1645 date was a transcription error and that they were actually married perhaps on 19 March 1647/8.

After his death, she married, as her 2nd, to William Titcomb.[3][5]

Perhaps I did not quite follow the purpose of the unmerged match, but William Stevens/Stevens-541 and William Titcomb/Titcomb-14 are known as two different men. Elizabeth Bitfield m1 William Stevens (who d. Newbury, 19 May 1653); she m2 as Elizabeth Stevens at Newbury 3 March 1653/4 to William Titcomb. See
