Biography

From a letter written by John Thorn in the possession of Art Thorn of Millbrook, Ontario he (John) was born in "Plymouth Dock now called Devonport, and baptised in Stoke Dameral, 1798." He also mentions both his parents were "natives of Devonshire". Stoke Damerel was a small village about half a mile east of the original Plymouth Dock but by the time John was born it had been taken up by Plymouth Dock. Plymouth Dock was later called Devon Port and is now part of Plymouth.
The Thorns lived in Devonport and attended Stoke Damerel Churh until sometime after 1800 and before 1807 when they moved to Maidstone, Kent. When Mary's father Thomas Stevens, Bricklayer, of Maidstone, Kent, died April 12, 1812 he willed some of his property at #1 and #2 Union St., Maidstone to his daughter Mary Thorn, wife of John Thorn of Maidstone, Kent, Bricklayer . [1]

From my grandmother ( Edythe Jago Shaw's ) notes: John's father was Robert Thorn who married Sarah Gourd. She also has John marrying Mary Watson and not Mary Stevens. John Thorn married Mary Watson Dec. 1794, in St. James, Bristol, Gloucester, England.

"England Marriages, 1538–1973 ," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NFRN-9Q5 : 10 December 2014), John Thorn and Mary Watson, 25 Dec 1794; citing St. James, Bristol, Gloucester, England, reference , index based upon data collected by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City; FHL microfilm 1,596,537.

Mary Stevens ... She passed away about 1851 and is buried in Potter's Field Cemetery, Toronto.
