Lewis Green Stephenson was born on 15 Aug 1868, in the small farming town of Chenoa, Illinois. He was the son of Adlai Ewing Stevenson, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1879-1881 and the Vice President of the United States in the first administration of Grover Cleveland from 1893 to 1897. His mother was Letitia Green who was the daughter of a Presbyterian minister and head of Center College in Danville, Kentucky.
Lewis was educated at Illinois State Normal School, now Illinois State University. On He married 21 Nov 1893, Lewis married Helen Louise Davis, the daughter of William O. Davis, the publisher of The Pantagraph newspaper in Bloomington, IL. Their marriage produced two children; Elizabeth in 1897 and Adlai Ewing Stevenson in 1900, who would grown-up to be Governor of Illinois, 2-time Democratic candidate for President, and US Representative to the United Nations.
Lewis Stevenson, like so many of his extended family, was active in politics. He was active in in the Democratic Party and its national conventions. He was his father's private secretary during his father's term as Vice President. He was the chairman of the Illinois State Board of Pardons, President of the Illinois Centennial Commission, and the State Secretary under Governor Edward Dune from 1913 to 1917.
Lewis Stephenson owned 13,00 acres of Illinois farmland and a coal mine.
Lewis Green Stevenson died of a sudden illness on 25 Apr 1929. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Bloomington, IL.
