Sarah was born in 1819. She is the daughter of William Stewart and Elizabeth Shirley. [1] In 1831 Sarah's father was convicted for stealing 2 cows sentenced to death and received a Royal Mercy having his sentence commuted to 7 years. In February 1833 her father was transported to NSW penal colony aboard the vessel Asia to serve the remaining 5 years of his sentence. [2] In 1832 her mother married Thomas Brower.
