Biography
Cicelie was the daughter of Augustine Steward and his second wife Elizabeth Reade. Her birth year of 1530 is to make her 20 years old when she married John Pickerell as her second husband.
She married Edmonde Wood before 1550 (in her will she bequeathed her wedding ring inscribed with "E & C Wood"). She was his second wife, and Edmonde already had adult children by his first wife. Edmonde died in 1548 when he was in office as Mayor of Norwich. He was buried at the church of St Clement in November 1548. His entry in the parish register is written in very large lettering, the date given as "lirte" possibly the first of the month: [1] [Buryals 1548] Edmounde Woode Mayor of Norwiche buried the lirte of November Ao Dni 1548
Edmond and Cicelie do not appear to have had any children together, although Edmond made provision for any unborn child in his extensive will and Cicelie was bequeathed property in Norwich. Edmond's will also named Augustine Steward as his father in law. [2]
As Cicelie Wood she married the widower John Pickarell of Dichborough (or Dickleburgh) Norfolk at the church of St Clements, Norwich on 15 September 1550. The register is annotated with roughly drawn hands pointing at the marriages of notable people. John and Cicelie's marriage has the pointing hand: [3] 1550 John Pickerell & Cicely Wood were maryed the 15 day of September Anno Dni 1550
Together they had two surviving children, John Pickerell and Susan Pickerell. John the elder died in 1556, and in his will, the properties in Norwich which Cicelie had brought to their marriage were to revert to Cicelie and then to John and Susan after Cicelie's death.
Cicelie married as her third husband Ralph Shelton of Broome, Norfolk.
Their son Raffe (Ralph) was baptised at St Michael at Coslany, Norwich on 14 September 1567: [4] [1567] Raffe Shelton the sonne of Mr Shelton gent the xiiij th of September
Their daughter Mary was born the following year and also baptised at St Michael in Coslany on 1 January 1568/9, indicating that the couple had a residence in that part of Norwich: [5] [1568] Mary Shelton the daughter of Mr Ralfe Shelton gent the j of January
