Research Notes

Protected Profile

Profile protected to preserve Steward spelling. When researching a newly adopted profile (Stuart-377), it appeared the correct spelling would be Steward (born in England, not Virginia, and earlier than the birth year given in the profile when adopted). The profile had death in 1703 in Henrico. Bristol Parish, Virginia, served Henrico County. A contemporary record exists showing a John Steward Jr. in Henrico County in 1697 (whether this John or a son is not clear, but probably a son).

John Steward Jr is mentioned several times in this article (spelled Stewart once):

Notes on Family from Merged Profile

Parents not alive when he was born: His date of birth is after his father's death (in England). His mother also died before he was born. Her profile shows that she died in Pateshull, Northamptonshire, England in 1638.
changing birth date & location makes this profile a match with Steward-695, who was baptized in Pateshull in 1634/5 (see that profile).
Last name: Note father was Stewart & he is Stuart. Susannah Hatcher's entry in the Hatcher Family Association database shows a reference to him as Steward:
" On 1 Dec 1699 Susannah renounced dower on 100 acres sold by John Steward to Michael Turpin."
Wife Susannah Hatcher - comment on her profile:
"I found on; Susannah (Hatcher) Burton was the daughter of (mother) Mariam (Newporte) Hatcher, and (father) William Hatcher. She married John Stuart in 1662, and it lasted until 1685. They married in Virginia. Then she married Thomas Christian Burton in 1685. " ~ posted 17 Jan 2018 by Amanda (Reed) Ostrander
The Hatcher Family Association database has Thomas as first husband, John as second:
"John Stewart b. Abt 1630, . . . Married Aft Feb 1685"[4]
The Hatcher Family Association lists no children for John & Susannah.
From available information, it seems more likely that John was Susannah's first husband and that the John who was racing horses in 1697 was their son John Jr., and the profiles attached as daughters to duplicates are theirs also: Elizabeth (born 1665) and Mary (b 1680).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share DNA with John:

There is still no record of John Steward of Pattishall being the same John Steward of Henrico, also there doesn't seem to be a source for his wife being Dorothy Waters. All the research that I have found refer to her maiden name not being known.

I live in Northamptonshire, England and would like to add the Category of Pattishall, Northamptonshire and also the county flag to this profile. I don't have any info about the move to the US but I have record of his baptism on freereg along with his brothers and sisters (surname spelling of Steward)

Malcolm - Good point. The parents are attached because both the merged profiles had them attached as parents. I was researching whether the name should be spelled Steward or Stuart. Totally missed that there wasn't any proof to connect that they were the same person (the one born in England & the one married in Virginia).

Am I missing something here, how do we know that John Steward pf Pattishall, bap. 8 Jan 1634 is the same John Stewart who got married in Henrico, VA in 1663.

Spelling of last name at birth needs to be resolved with source(s) before the merge can proceed between Stewart-5866 and Steward-695.

update: merge completed, birth year changed for son.

Stewart-6583 and Steward-695 appear to represent the same person because: see text in Steward-695 about "Steward" as LNAB. Based on birth year of Stewart-6583's daughter, I believe it is a duplicate of the father, not the son (also, I think Susannah is bettr suited to be the wife of the father/mother of John Jr., but that would push his [unsourced] 1654 birth to after 1662. I think that works. For now, please merge these profiles. Thanks!

Steward-923 and Steward-695 appear to represent the same person because: same parents; birth/death dates close. His parents died in England, so unlikely he was born in Virginia. Bristol Parish served Henrico County, Virginia. Please merge. Thanks!
