Research Notes

Considerable confusion has resulted from William Stewart being confused with another man of the same name whose wife was also named Eleanor.

William Stewart was the son of John & Elizabeth Stewart. He resided in Greenup County, Kentucky and Wayne County, West Virginia. He married Eleanor Walker 26 January 1817 in Cabell County, Virginia. In 1850 he resided in Wayne County, Virginia. [1]

The other William Stewart (sometimes called William Ralph Stewart) was the son of Ralph Stewart and Mary Obedience Clay. He married Eleanor Canterbury 27 February 1824 in Giles County, Virginia. In 1850 he resided Wyoming County, Virginia. [2] [3]

Biography

William Stewart was born 7 July 1792, [3] Rockingham County, Virginia. William Stuart's pension application for service in the War of 1812, gives proof of his birth date and place as well as his wife's name and her father (Charles Walker). All of these items match with the Wayne County death records.[4]

William Stewart married Eleanor Walker, 16 January 1817 in Cabell County, Virginia.[5]

William Stewart was administrator for the estate of his father, John Stewart in Greenup County, Kentucky. The deeds dividing the farm of John Stewart prove the heirs. William Stewart and Eleanor his wife of Wayne Co Virginia are clearly named in one of the deeds and the other deeds all reference the John Stewart "heirs".

3 April 1853 William Stewart & Eleanor his wife of Wayne Co Virginia to Samuel Palmer of Greenup Co sell 9 acres, Lot #2 of the division of the lands of John Stewart......William Stewart being one of the heirs of said John Stewart deceased. Signed Wm. Stewart, Eleanor (X) Stewart [6]

21 Apr 1853 William Stewart & Eleanor his wife of Wayne Co., VA to Samuel Palmer of Greenup Co -- "witness whereas by a division of the lands of the late John Stewart"-William Stewart became possessed of lot no 2-- $50 paid by Palmer to Stewart-containing 9 acres. Signed: William Stewart Eleanor (X) Stewart [7]

A deed dated 19 October 1855 in Greenup County, Kentucky demonstrates that Charles Stewart's children received a portion of the estate of John Stewart, their grandfather. They sold their portion to their uncle William Stewart. The identities of the persons in this deed are: James A., John M, and George W. Stewart were sons of Charles Stewart and Cynthia Mead; Sophia Riggs, wife of William Riggs, was Sophia Stewart, daughter of Charles Stewart and Cynthia Mead. The William Stewart they had previously sold to would be Charles Stewart's brother William Stewart who administered the estate of John Stewart. [8]

31 January 1856 Noah Payne and wife to A.T. Gilley--$55--land in Greenup Co., "set apart to said Sarah Payne as one of the heirs of John Stewart and marked and numbered on plat division of the [sic land?] of said Stewart, lot no 3, containing 8 acres. Signed: Noah Payne, Sarah Payne. [9]

A deed dated 5 March 1856 is bit confusing because Elizabeth Stewart and her husband James Stewart both died in 1851 but the Greenup County deed shows Elizabeth's children inherited her portion of the John Stewart farm even though it was in James Stewart's name. [10]

A Greenup County deed with no month or day just the year 1858-- shows Amanda Bellomy and her husband William Barbour sold their share in land inherited from her mother, Margaret (Stewart) Gilkey, daughter John Stewart.[11]

William used two different spellings for his surname Stuart and Stewart.

When his wife died 3 years later her last name was spelled Stewart. Elinor Stewart, age 86, died 31 [sic] April 1883 in Wayne County, West Virginia. Her father was Charley Walker. Consort of William Stewart. The death was reported by her son-in-law. [14]
