John (Stewart) Stewart Lord Darnley and First Earl of Lennox is a member of Clan Stewart.
John (Stewart) Stewart Lord Darnley and First Earl of Lennox is Notable.
John Stewart, 1st Earl of Lennox (b. bef. 1422, d. 8 Jul/11 Sep 1495) was known as Lord Darnley and later as the Earl of Lennox. John was the son of Sir Alan Stewart[1] and Catherine Seton and has been confused with another John Stewart, the son of James Stewart "The Black Knight of Lorn" and Joan Beaufort, widow of King James I. Joan's husbands also being confused in the past.
He was created 1st Earl of Lennox on 6 August 1473.[2] He held the office of Lord Warden of the West March in 1481. In 1482 he was one of the lords who seized King James III, but was pardoned. He held the office of Keeper of Dumbarton Castle in 1488.
Marriage
On 15 May 1438 John Stewart married his first wife Margaret Montgomerie, daughter of Alexander Montgomerie (1st Lord Montgomerie) and his wife Margaret Boyd by indenture, with both parties being underage. and had issue:
It is possible that John had a daughter Janet, however, Charles Cawley who wrote the section on the FMG website about John Stewart of Darley said:
"On this case, I note that Complete Peerage Vol. XI p. 157 says that Janet was "probably" the daughter of Matthew, that she is called daughter of John in Scots Peerage but that this seems stretched from a chronological point of view. Presumably, the primary source on which the marriage is based just calls her "Janet Stewart of Lennox" or similar so there can never be a definitive answer to the question. I´ll delete Janet daughter of John, and place Janet, daughter of Matthew in square brackets, in my master copy document for the next version of the document to be sent to the FMG for uploading."
For this reason, Janet is shown as a daughter of Matthew, John's son: Janet m Ninian Ross, Lord Ross of Halkhead.
That there are two daughters name Elizabeth is not common unless by separate wives. In the profile for one of these daughter, Elizabeth (Stewart) Campbell, it is mentioned that there were two wilves with the same name as well as the same name for their respective fathers.
Fraser asserts that John Maxwell of Pollock married one of John's daughters named Elizabethr.[3] Some secondary sources claim it was Elizabeth claims that it was Elizabeth the daughter of Matthew.

There is a second list of children differing only in sequence and the loss of a second Elizabeth. This is a bit confusing so possibly this can be moved to research notes with additional explanation. Also, it seems that the two daughters named Elizabeth might have been from two separate wives of John if the notes on the profile of the Elizabeth who married Campbell are correct. Lastly, possibly the note referring to Janet can be moved to research notes.
Heard back from Charles Cawley who wrote the section on the FMG website. The info in previous message conflicts with FMG. Until someone can check the reference (which I can't) I'm not going to do anything, so wife Margaret will remain as daughter of first Alexander and Margaret Boyd.
Found this on Wikipedia, Reference: G. E. Cokayne et al., The Complete Peerage of England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain and the United Kingdom, Extant, Extinct, or Dormant. (Gloucester, U.K.: Alan Sutton, 2000) I:313, 328; VII:594, 596. I can't get access to this, but we may have the wrong Margaret Montgomery.
"John is recorded as having contracted to marry Margaret, the daughter of Alexander Montgomerie, 1st Lord Montgomerie, and Margaret Boyd, by indenture on 15 May 1438 as both parties were under age. She, however, appears to have died young. Ultimately, he married Margaret Montgomerie in 1460, who was not the same individual, but her fraternal niece, daughter of Alexander, Master of Montgomerie, by his wife Elizabeth Hepburn."

Was looking into the Stewart Family on the Foundation for Medieval Genealogy
Website and I saw where Ninian Ross was married to Janet Stewart and also to her niece Janet Stewart. Wasnt sure if it was an error or not so I thought I would mention it to FMG and await their response.
There is a Janet Stuart, Stuart-1320, who married a Ninian Ross, Ross-606, but her parents are shown as Matthew Stewart, Stewart-1359, son of this John, and Margaret Lyle, Lyle-173. Are we sure that Janet was the daughter of John, not Matthew?
