Robert Stewart was born in 1776 in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland. He was the son of Alexander Stewart (1745–1816) and his wife Jane Kennedy (1748–1816).

He died 23 Jan 1876 in Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada and was buried in the graveyard at St John Anglican Church, Penville, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada.

Robert Stewart was married to his 1st wife Nancy Watson about 1795 in Belfast, Antrim, Northern Ireland.

He was widowed after 1802.

He was then married to his 2nd wife Nancy Montgomery about 1805.

Elizabeth Stewart daughter of Robert Stewart and Nancy Watson, who came to Canada with an aunt, a Mrs. Watson, from Belfast, Ireland in 1807 and settled in what is now the town of Grimsby.

Jane Stewart daughter of Robert Stewart and Nancy Watson was married to Peter Pottruff, brother of Simeon Pottruff, Husband of Elizabeth Stewart.
