James Wyse Stewart was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in about 1860. He was the eldest son of Archibald and Susan (Wyse) Stewart. Susan was widowed in the 1870's when Archibald, a railway engineer, died as the result of an accident in Perth, Scotland, leaving her with nine children to raise. James worked initially as a marine engineer, and after several years of voyages to New Orleans and the West Indies, came ashore in 1889 at Port Napier in New Zealand. Here he was employed as an engineer at the local freezing works for 18 months before moving to the Islington Freezing Works in Canterbury, where he worked for two and a half years as Chief Engineer.
James met Margaret Innes (Maggie) in 1890 and married her on 21 November 1891 at St Saviour's Church, Templeton. James and Maggie had two children, Hilda and James Wyse Jnr. James died suddenly of "heart disease" on 21 July 1894 while taking a bath at a barber's shop in Colombo Street, Christchurch. He was 34. He was buried on at St Saviour's Church Cemetery at Templeton, Canterbury. [1]
