He was baptised on 30 October 1692 in the parish of Abbey, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.
It is probable that James had already "gone to Sea" probably as a crewman or possibly as a mariner or Master Mariner and was working the west coast trade between Glasgow, Workington, Whitehaven, Liverpool and Bristol.
He passed away in Workington, Cumberland, England about 1766/67.
He was buried in St Andrews, Penrith, Cumberland on 10 Jan 1767.
