Biography

Elizabeth Stewart was born about 1680 at Physgill Manor. She was the youngest daughter of John Stewart of Physgill and his wife Agnes Stewart. [1](Uncertain whether this is the correct record. Date is christening date; therefore, DOB is marked as 'before'.

An interesting and brief description of Phisgal (Physgill), home of the Stewarts: under the cliff at the seaside, is a very solitary place. called St Ninian's Cave to which St Ninian would sometimes retire himself. Along the path to the stony beach the cave was the subject of pilgrimage over many centuries to where the man who brought Christianity to Scotland is reputed to have meditated. [2][3]

She married Patrick Coltrane of Drummorall on April 30, 1702 in Glasserton, Wigtownshire, Scotland. [4]

Children of Elizabeth Stewart & Patrick Coltrane of Drummorall;

1. John Coltrane, b. 11 Mar 1703 in Wigtown, Wigtownshire, Scotland

2. Henrietta Coltrane. b. Abt 1706 in Wigtown, Wigtownshire, Scotland

3. David Coltrane b Jun 24, 1707in Wigtown, Scotland[5]

4. Robert Coltrane. b. before 9 Jul 1708 in Wigtown, Wigtownshire, Scotland,

5. Alexander Coltrane. b. before 28 Jun 1709 in Wigtown, Wigtownshire, Scotland,

6. David Coltrane, b. Sep 7, 1711 in Wigtown, Wigtownshire, Scotland[6]

There is some confusion on the number of children born to Patrick and Elizabeth. Some believe that there were only four children, three sons and one daughter: John, Patrick, David and Henrietta. A more recent genealogical researcher has concluded that Parish records support that there were five sons: John, David I (died at birth), Robert, Alexander, Thomas and David II. What is not disputed is that parents - Patrick and Elizabeth - died early, while the children were very young. Consequently, they were reared by their maternal grandparents, John and Agnes Stewart, Baron/Baroness of Physgill. Thus far, we only know what became of two of the children: John (christened 3/11/1703) and David II (christened 9/7/1711).

She died before her father's death in 1719.
