Biography

Percy Stewart is a member of Clan Stewart.

Sir Percy Malcolm Stewart was born on 9 May 1872 at St Leonards, Sussex, England. He was the son of Halley Stewart (the sixth of eight children) and his wife Jane Elizabeth Atkinson.^[1]

He was educated at Royal High School, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He was educated at University School, Hastings, Kent, England. He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Bedfordshire. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Bedfordshire. He was Director for the Ministry of Munitions between 1917 and 1919 at Government Rolling Mills, Southampton, Hampshire, England. He was invested as a Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1918. He was Commissioner of Special Areas (England and Wales) between 1934 and 1936. He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Manchester University, Manchester, Lancashire, England, in 1937. He was created 1st Baronet Stewart, of Stewartby, co. Bedford [U.K.] on 4 March 1937. He held the office of High Sheriff of Bedfordshire in 1941.

He died on 27 February 1951 at age 78.

Marriage

In 1896 Sir Percy was first married to Cordelia Rickett the daughter of Sir Joseph Compton Rickett.

On 25 April 1907 He was married for the second time to Beatrice Maud Pratt the daughter of Joseph Bishop Pratt.
