Ira Wellington Stewart was born in Yorkshire, Cattaraugus, New York around 1849. He seems to have preferred to use Wellington as his name for most of his life. He is mentioned, age 1, in the United Sates Census of 1850 in Yorkshire, Cattaraugus, New York in the household of his father, Allen Stewart, Other people in the household include his mother Eurana, older sister Frances and grandfather Lott Stewart.[1] In the New York State Census of 1855, Lott is missing (d. 1853) but children Joseph and Henry have been added to the family.[2]
Wellington's father Allen died young, in about 1855, and Wellington is next mentioned in the United States census of 1860. His mother had remarried by this time and the extended family is recorded in Yorkshire with Alpheus Wright as head, Eurana (spelled Urcemia in the census document) and the Stewart children of Frances, Wellington, Joseph, Henry and Eva. There are also two children with Alpheus, Albert Wright and Adelbert Wright. [3]
Wellington Stewart left New York and moved west. He married Mary Hoon on January 10, 1870 in Jones County, Iowa most likely in Anamosa where they obtained the marriage license.[4] In the census of that year, taken July 1, 1870, Wellington is listed as a tenant farmer in Jackson County. Daughters Jennie and Nona were born during their time in Iowa.
The family is recorded in the United States Census of 1880, now living in Anoka, Minnesota where Wellington works in a lumberyard. Anoka had a number of sawmills as logs were floated down the Rum River to the mills.[5] The family consists of Wellington, wife Mary and two daughters, Jenny and Nona[6]
From Anoka the family moved to North Dakota where Wellington purchased land in Cavalier County, on October 15, 1884.[7] Son Leslie Nestfield was born here in 1893.
The neighboring homestead was owned by Robert West and in 1889 daughter Jennie marries Robert West.
The family emigrated to Canada in 1902 to the area around Strome Alberta. [8] Jennie and Robert West followed in 1906 [9] and the extended family is recorded in the Canada Census of 1906 in the District of Strathcona. Listed in the household are Wellington and wife Mary, his daughter Jennie with her husband Robert West, and their children Charles, William, Bertha, Fred and George.
Thirteen year old Bertha (West) Harris remembers her arrival in Canada. "Grandfather Stewart met us (at Daysland) with a team of horses and a wagon. He took us to his home where we stayed until father (Robert West) got our house built" [10]
Around 1911 Wellington and Mary moved to homestead land near Metiskow, Alberta. [11] In the Canada Census of 1916 Wellington and Mary are living on this farm described as Battle River District 32, Township 40.[12]
Wellington Stewart died in 1927 and is buried in the small cemetery just outside Metiskow, Alberta.[13]
