Biography

Eliza was born in 1883 in Lewis County, West Virginia, probably in Weston where her family was living. She was the thirteenth-born and daughter of John Charles Stewart and Rebecca Alcinda Gaston. She grew up in Weston, and then worked there as a saleslady in a store and doing clerical work in an office, while continuing to live with her parents. She married late at the age of 38 in 1921 to the widower Alois J. Salzer in Parkersburg, WV. The couple ended up settling in Texas where Alois worked in an oil refinery in Port Arthur, and later he managed a hotel in Centerville. Eliza never had children. Her husband Alois died in 1942, and Eliza appears to have returned to live in Weston, probably to live with her younger unmarried sister. She died in 1978 and is buried in the Machpelah Cemetery in Weston.
