Resided in Henry County, Missouri.

J. D. Stewart, listed as nephew of Luther Stewart, living with Luther Stewart's family, age 17, in 1880 Census for White Oak, Henry, Missouri, online at familysearch.org [1]

Jefferson D Steuart was living with his mother Clara and sisters Nettie and Bessie in Clinton, Henry, MO in 1880. He was age 18, b VA.[2]

Not found in records after 1880. His mother, however, in the 1900 and 1910 Censuses reported that she was the mother of three children, all three living. She was living in St. Louis, MO in 1900 and in Brooklyn, NY in 1910.

Research Notes

His maternal grandfather's name was Alpheus. His mother, Clara, was the matron of a newsboys' home in St. Louis in 1900. There is an A Jefferson D. Stewart in St. Louis, MO in 1897, editor of the Legal Pub. Co.[3]Alpheus J D Stewart was in St. Louis, MO in 1898, listed as a journalist.[4]He was the editor of Dyer's News Letter in 1900.[5]

Alpheus Stewart b Aug 1864 in VA age 35 married 6 yrs, occupation editorial writer; wife Candace C. (LNAB Bruce; formerly Lewis) married 6 yrs b IL as were parents. Her son was Louis L. Lewis, age 18 b MO occupation telegrapher.[6]

Alpheus Stewart b 1865 VA married to Candace Arella Stewart age 45 b IL; her mother Rachel Bruce age 74 b IL. Alpheus was an editor; Candace was a decorator.[7]

Alpheus Stewart b 1871 in VA was age 49 and single, lodging in St. Louis in 1920, occupation newspaper writer.[8]

By 1922 he had left the newspaper business and was sponsoring a bill in the Missouri State Legislature proposing a state police force.[9]
