Biography

Early Life

Nancy was born in Georgia [1] to John Stewart and Elizabeth White in Mar of 1841[2]
In 1850, her family lived on a family farm in Macon, Georgia. [1]She was the middle child of six.
By 1852, her family had moved to Pike, Alabama. Her younger brother, Gilford Stewart, was the first to be born here in October of 1952.

Marriage and Family

George Washington Jeter

On June 24, 1858, Nancy Stewart and George Jeter married in Pike, Alabama. [3]
In 1860, the couple owned their own farm in Pike, Alabama and had one daughter. Her brother, Charles Stewart, lived nearby. [4]
In 1861, George Jeter joined the 15th Alabama Infantry Regiment, fighting for the CSA during the Civil War. The had a son, Lorenzo Jeter, in March 1862.
George subsequently re-enlists in 1863. After that, I can find no record of him. I believe he died in service, but I am still looking for sources.

William F. Crew

Sometime between 1863 and 1870, she marries William Crew. I am still looking for their marriage information.
In 1870, she is living with him in Darby, Pike, Alabama - along with her two children, who are attributed with the last name Crew. I am not sure if he adopted them, or it was a mistake on part of the census taker. An Anna Crew also lives with them. [5]
The couple had two children - Emor and Gussie Lou Crew.
Sometime between 1870 and 1880, William passes away.

Widowhood

In 1880, Nancy is widowed. She, Emor, and Gussie are living with Nancy's oldest son, Lorenzo. Both the girls attend school and Lorenzo farms. [6]
In 1900[7] and 1910[8] Nancy lives with her daughter's, Gussie Lou (Crew) Harrelson's, family in Rose Hill, Covington County, Alabama. Gussie has now married Enos Harrelson. Enos runs a farm. [9]

Obituary In Andalusia Star

About one oclock Tuesday morning June 23rd, 1914, the cold icy touch of death forever stilled the warm loving heart of Nancy F Crew, age seventy two years, daughter of J.F Stewart and E.W Stewart and mother of L.F Jeter of Hilton Ala and Mrs. E H Harrison of Andalusia, Ala

Three long weeks she suffered, struggled and strove to recover but all in vain. With all the best physical aid could administer, all the help and sympathy of kind friends and loved ones she had to go. While it is so hard to giver her up and our hearts are torn and rivens by the unimtely spearation of one so dear, so gentle and noble, it is a great consolation to know that while there is one jewel less on earth, there is one angel more in Heaven. Yes, she is an angel now basking and happy in the sunshine of Heaven, where pains and sufferings come no more, where no signs of age are seen, where sickness 'ere can come and death has lost it's power, but where thosands of blessings compensate for every throb of pain felt while here on earth.

She was a devoted Christian, having joined the M. E Church when only nine years old, ever after living an ideal Christian life. The happiest hours of her life were those spent in praising the Lord.

Dearest grandmother, we miss you every where, we miss you voice in the family circle, we miss you in our difficult lessons of life, we miss that bright smile and quickening step as came hurrying home after a few weeks' visit with relatives that seemed months to us. The eighteen years that made our home yours were happy years for all. How little did we think when we commended you to the loving care of a sister several weeks ago that we never see you coming home again. Home, yes. You have gone home.

"Farewell, farewell," the struggle is past, the fond ties that bound us are severed. The quickening pulse and the quivering voices silenced at length in the stillness of death. The features once radiant with life's sunny pleasure on the dear ones of earth.

The voice of a mother and sister, forever is silenced, gone forever, and the form of one so dear now lies smouldering in the deolate grave. Death granted a joyous release from her pains and what she has lost here, imoortality gains, for her soul now released from its portals of clay, has aged through eternity freely away, as fixed ans as firm as the storm beaten rock that sustains in mid-ocean and with the glad tidings of Heaven's bright throng. She is now enjoying the song, "Praise be the Father, Parise be to the sone, The race is now ended, The victory is won."
