Biography

Margaret was born in 1853, Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland. Parents being Alexander Stewart and Elizabeth McLean.

Margaret was christened on the 3 Jul 1853, in the Gorbals, Lanark. ^[1]

1861 The Stewart family are found visiting the McKellar family who are residents of 24 Watergate Street, Rothesay, Bute. Isabella McKellar is recorded as the Head of the household and a widow, aged 59, occupation Housekeeper, birth place North Napdale, Argyll, her children are Isabella, age 20 occupation Dressmaker, birth place Dunoon, Argyll and John, age 15, occupation Apprentice Baker, birth place Glasgow. The Stewart's are Alexander, age 31, occupation recorded as a Ropemaker, birth place Callender, Perth, Elizabeth is 30, occupation Housekeeper, birth place Glasgow and their children are Margaret age 7 years, recorded as attending School (Scholar ), birth place Glasgow and Christina who is just 1 year old, birth place Glasgow. ^[2]

Note: Missing from the 1861 census is sister Elizabeth, she died in 1857

1868 Margaret was about 14 when her father Alexander died.The family were living at 44 Clyde Street, Glasgow at the time.

1871 The Stewart family are found living at 50 Struthers Street, Glasgow. Margaret is about 17 years old and working as a Power Loom weaver. Her mother Elizabeth is Head of the household age 38, occupation is that of a House Keeper. Siblings in the household are Christina age 11, who is attending School, (Scholar), Duncan age 9 years ( Scholar ), John is 7, a ( Scholar ), Archibald age 5 and Elizabeth is about 3 years of age. They have a Lodger staying with them Catherine Swan age 20 , occupation French Polisher, Birthplace Dumfriesshire. All the Stewart's were born in Lanarkshire. ^[3]
