Biography

Elkanah married Lydia Cobb on 7 Sep 1761 in Hardwick, Massachusetts. They had at least 6 children together.

  1. Priscilla (b. 3 May 1762)
  2. Samuel (b. 2 Dec 1763)
  3. Prudence (b. 11 Apr 1765)
  4. Lydia (b. 19 Sep 1767)
  5. John (b. 19 Jul 1769)
  6. Moses (b. 19 Apr 1771)

According to the Stewart Clan Magazine[1], he moved to Barnard, Vermont around 1779, where he died of hydrophobia due to the bite of a mad wolf. His widow remarried in 1784. Extracted from "The Courier", Bethel, Vermont, Thursday, 14 Nov. 1912, page 3, Old Times in Banard, No. 52. Elkanah Stewart, the victim of a "mad wolf", as recounted last week, was bitten by the wolf March 17, 1784, and died a month later, so the date of the incident is fixed. Elkanah Stewart was a French and Indian War man, and perhaps saw service in the War for Independence. He settled in Barnard before 1778, removing from Hardwick where his six children were born. The widow, Lydia Cobb, married soon after John Benjamin, Esq. The children of Elkanah and Lydia were: Priscilla, who married, 1782Fitch Dutton, Samuel, born, 1763, married Sarah, daughter of Capt. Daniel Egery. Samuel resided in Barnard and had two wives, the first dying soon after marriage and by second wife Sally or Sarah, had at least six children. He died Feb. 19, 1813, aged almost 50 years and is buried in the Cemetery on the Barnard-Bethel North road; Prudence, married, 1782, Timothy Bannister; Lydia, born, 1767, married, 1789, Asa Paige; John, born, 1769, who was bitten by the mad wolf, and subject to strange spells to his death, and Moses, born, 1771. The son, Samuel, was bitten, but it would appear by the heroic treatment of cutting out the wound that he did not become as his father and brother, though it may have been the means of his death at the age of fifty years. The daughter Lydia, who married Asa Paige, survived until 1847, aged 80 years. Benjamin Miles narrated this incident to the reporter long ago.
