Biography

Hugh Gordon Stewart was born on 25 November 1836 in Northampton, Virginia, when his parents and siblings moved there from Accomack Co. He was the son of James Stewart and his 3rd wife Tabitha Snead at age 14 in 1850[1].

He moved across the bay to Portsmouth VA sometime after 1850 where he met and married Virginia Frances Snead (1841–1911) on 10 November 1859 in the Dinwiddie Street Church, Portsmouth, Virginia, United States. They moved in with her parents and siblings with "Frances" at age 19 in Portsmouth 1860 while he worked as a Grocer (age 23) [2].

He was mentioned in his father's Will in Northampton Co. 1860 instructed to take care of his two sisters: "I give and devise to my son Hugh G. Stewart, for the sale use and benefit of my daughters, Harriet S. Cottingham and Rosy A. Stewart, the sum of three hundred dollars; the same to be equally used and divided between them by him". He would receive another $50 if his mother refused the money in lieu of the negro woman, "I also give her the further sum of fifty dollars, in lieu of her dower in my Negro woman hereinafter given away: provided, however, should my said wife refuse to accept the said sum of fifty dollars as her dower in lieu of said Negro woman, I give the same sum of fifty dollars to my son, Hugh G. Stewart".

When his father-in-law died abt 1868, he moved her family, widowed mother and siblings to Norfolk City and became a Fire and Life Ins Agent by 1870[3].

By 1880 as a successful insurance agent, he moved the family including her aging mother, his niece Mary (Mamie) Snead age 24, and two children Charles (age12) and Annie Virginia (Stewart) Lyons (1867-1948) (age 14) to Baltimore, MD on the "sw Side of Madison Ave"[4] where he passed away nine years later on 7 July 1889.

His daughter, Annie Virginia (Stewart) Lyons (1867-1948) married John Edward Lyons of Baltimore and a federal gov't contractor that moved to Washington DC in Dec 1885 following their marriage. The Lyons family had moved to Washington in 1886 from Gilmor Ave, Baltimore. John and Annie Stewart Lyons settled in the Brookland area of Washington DC where his widow, Virginia Frances died in 1911.

He died 7 Jul 1889[citation needed] and buried at New Cathedral Cemetery aka "Bonnie Brae" Find A Grave: Memorial #211305173) which reports 9 Jul 1889 (perhaps burial date??).
