John Stewart on 26 April 1804 married Flory Watson. It is conjectured that this is the Flora (sic) Watson[1] who was born 26 April 1784, she was daughter to John Watson in Imochar (sic) (possibly Imachar on the west coast of Arran[2]). If this conjecture is correct, it indicates that Flory was 20 years' old on her wedding day, John was 22. The marriage register records "John Stewart Cooper son to Neil Stewart Labourer at Port Bannatyne and Flory Watson daughter to the late John Watson Tenant in Dubhlock"[3]. Dubh Loch (sic) is a small loch[4] some 5.6km north- east of Imachar. It is shown on the 19th C. estate plan of Angus McMillan[5]. A modern day image is here[6]. It should be noted that Arran was historically a part of Buteshire.
Old Parish Records have records for three of John and Flory's children
Bute Family History group ‘Sons & Daughters of Bute’ in their database[7]record the birth dates as follows: Archibald 18 Oct 1805; Janet 20 Feb 1810; Neil 13 Jan 1817. They record that they had two additional children, John and James. Old Parish Records for these two cannot be located.
It may be that Flory (Flora) relocated to the Rothesay area after her father passed away, and there she met John Stewart.
