I’m a writer and anthropologist. I write fiction and nonfiction and, one day, I hope to be published somewhere other than a textbook.[1]

I’m here to learn more about genealogy in general, and my own heritage, which is mostly English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh, with some Nordic trying to invade the fringes.

YDNA Timeline

232,000 BCE- Modern homosapiens evolve in Africa and the Eastern Indo-Pacific and begin to migrate throughout the world. It is currently unclear if our Stewart line originated out of Africa, or around Indonesia, at the beginning of humanity’s journey.

43,000 BCE- Our Stewart line was in Mesopotamia, in modern day Iran. In the Bible, this would be the time of Adam and Eve.

34,000 BCE- Our Stewart line was in modern day Southern Mongolia/Northern China. This is when we separated from the group that would become the first Native Americans. Our Stewart line returns to Mesopotamia; one of males from this group heads north and crosses the land bridge from Russia into Alaska and becomes the first human migration into North America. In the Bible, this would have been the time of the “Fall” or exile from Eden.

4350 BCE- Our Stewart line was located in Eastern Turkey and belonged to a group called the Maykop culture in archaeology. It is unclear what they called themselves. The Maykop developed the wheel and left Eastern Turkey moving north into the Caucuses mountains and into the Russian steppe around the Black Sea. In the Bible, this is the time of Noah and his three sons: Japheth, Shem and Ham. The sons of Japheth went north into the area around the Black Sea, and some areas of Ancient Greece. Abraham is a descendant of Shem in which all Jews and Arabs descend. Ham’s descendants include the Egyptians and peoples that went south.

2650 BCE- Our Stewart line was part of the Yamnaya culture that lived in the area of modern day Hungary. During this time, the first global pandemic occurred in prehistory that killed a large part of European farming cultures that ruled most of Europe in prehistory. Our Yamnaya Stewart ancestors were protected from this disease due to their dairy diet the farmers of Europe did not have the tolerance for. Our ancestors took this opportunity, after the pandemic, to conquer most of Europe and wiped out most of the farming cultures that had ruled these lands in prior times. This invasion was so large and successful that it changed humanity’s DNA into what it is today, destroying the admixtures of the past and its likely we will never know much about the farming cultures that inhabited Europe in prehistory, because of this.

The Yamnaya, it’s also unclear what they called themselves, were a culture of decentralized kingdoms, or tribes, or clans that ruled most of ancient Europe and began the first worldwide trading network on both land and sea, that connected the known world at the time.

2500 BCE- Our Stewart line has traveled from Hungary to Wales over the past few centuries, showing how our Stewart line’s “home base” migrated through Europe and into the British Isles during this time. This would be the time of the first Arthur of history, that would become a legend in modern times today. These ancient peoples would build the first church in the British Isles and also the first University, or place of “high learning”. These peoples also turned Britain into a global trading hub, during this timeframe. These peoples led to the High Kings of Ireland, and Scotland, and the ancient Celtic kingdoms (in modern day England) that have been lost to time due to the invasion of the Romans. Our Stewart line belonged to one of these ancient Celtic kingdoms and our cousins are the Kings of Ireland and Scotland, in history. Currently, our migrant group into the British Isles are known in the Annuals of the Four Masters as the Nemedians, who arrived approximately 2500 BCE into modern day Kent, England. We are the 2nd group of the Tuatha De Danann to arrive in the British Isles in ancient times. Our Royal Stewart yDNA cousins were also part of this 2nd group. A century or so later, the Milesians, with the yDNA line of Robert the Bruce arrived.

2050 BCE- Our direct Stewart line first appears in Ancient Irish Mythology as our ancestor Dagda Mor (R-DF23). [2]

2000 BCE- Our Stewart ancestor has a brother that leads to Daniel Boone and his descendants (R-ZP112).

1000 CE- Our Stewart ancestor takes part in the Norman invasion with William the Conquerer and were most likely part of the Norman culture during this time and came from Brittany, France after fleeing our old Celtic kingdom in England due to the invasions of Rome and the Angles and Saxons a few hundred years prior. It’s likely we were gifted lands in Inverness, Scotland for our Stewart ancestor’s role in William’s invasion and victory over his rivals. The Royal Stewarts are well documented as receiving land and title in the area of Shropshire, England for the part their Stewart ancestor, Alan FitzFlaad, played in William’s victory. It’s highly likely our Stewart ancestor also received lands, being a cousin to Alan FitzFlaad, along with many other leading families in William’s Royal Court, that received land and titles all through the British Isles after William’s victory.

1400 CE- Our Stewart ancestor was around the area of Inverness, Scotland and belonged to Clan Grant. If we were using a surname at this point (unlikely) our Stewart ancestor would have actually been a Grant. A union between the House of Stewart and Clan Grant occurred during this time and it led to many of Clan Grant, taking the new surname of “Stewart”. Our direct ancestor, that is in Paw-Paw’s male line, was one of the members of Clan Grant that did this.

1760 CE- Charles Stewart is born 16 January 1761 and is Paw-Paw Stewart’s direct ancestor. He lived in Bladen County, NC and his family was associated with the Regulator Movement tied to Herman Husband and the Quaker Movement. Evidence suggests Charles’ father was James Stewart, and likely the Captain James Stewart taken prisoner by Governor Tyron in the Battle of Alamance in 1771. It’s highly likely our Stewart ancestor came from Inverness, Scotland to Georgia, South Carolina, or by Maryland sometime in the early 1700’s.

Family Tree

I have several lines of Stewart, with both of my paternal grandparents descending from Stewarts, and Stewarts/Stuarts also on my mother’s side.

According to collective research, my yDNA was in the area of Abernethy, Perthshire, Scotland around the 14th century and my line emigrated to Virginia, Maryland and South Carolina sometime around 1716 (perhaps earlier, around 1685). We were likely Jacobites and Presbyterian. My line were early settlers in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina moving into these regions in the early 1700’s.

Before we were Stewarts, we were part of Clan Grant and lived near Abernethy in Perthshire. We likely adopted the Stewart surname sometime around the 14th century.

My 6th great-grandparents James and Elizabeth Stewart were cousins with Elizabeth descending from Patrick Stewart (1697-1774), 5th Laird of Ledcreich and Stroslany, from Balquhidder.

Currently, my yDNA is confirmed to Charles Stewart b. 16 Jan 1761 in Bladen (modern day Robeson County), North Carolina, on Drowning Creek.

My paternal grandmother, Willie Dee Anderson, Stewart line descends from Alexander Stewart (the Wolf of Badenoch), possibly arriving with their Ledcriech cousins and allied families in 1739.

A few of branches in my family tree are Scottish, English and Irish immigrants that arrived on the Thistle, from Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Cape Fear, North Carolina in 1739 (and subsequent ships till about 1755). Many of my ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War, on both sides of my family.

I also have several branches of my tree that were part of the Regulator Movement in North and South Carolina. These surnames include Stewart, Anderson, Gibson, Marsh, Miles, Wilkins, White, and Walker.

Ancient History

My yDNA has deeper roots in Neolithic times with the Yamnaya (aka Celtic/Bell Beaker) culture that crossed into Britain (likely from Brittany) around 2550 BCE. By 2450 BCE, my line was in Northern Ireland and remained in the areas of the British Isles, Scandinavia, Iceland, and Brittany for the next 4,000 years before coming to the American colonies around 1685-1716 CE. For much of ancient times, my male line is closely associated with the Viking occupation.[3]

One interesting discovery is my father’s line and the Royal Stewarts are ancient cousins that belonged to the same Neolithic tribe (Yamnaya) that came out of Mesopotamia (in 12,000 BCE, or the end of the last Ice Age), through Turkey, Ukraine, around the Black Sea into Europe and eventually crossed the English Channel into British Isles. Before the Roman invasion, we were known as the Venetii, a seafaring tribe that had ports all along the coast of Brittany, Portugal, the British Isles, and up into Iceland and the Faroe Islands. According to FTDNA, my father’s line matches Clan MacLaren, Clan Campbell, the House of Stewart and Stewarts of Appin Clan in 2450BCE. We all descend from R-Z39589, a haplogroup for an unknown individual from this timeframe. My yDNA is ancient Celtic.

This is a work in progress and will change based on new archaeological data but, in the early Bronze Age it’s likely my tribe were based in Iona, and were known as the Clan of the Brown Bear, closely associated with the Venetii (and other Celtic tribes listed below). In the pre-Roman era, my male line was in the area of the Celtic tribe known as the Brigantes, in northern England, named after the ancient Celtic goddess Brigantia. We likely served in the Kingdom of Rheged or Gywnedd during the Iron Age. The Parisi tribe was also in this area and my line possibly belonged to their tribe.

It’s also likely the Brigantes were in confederation with the Venetti, Parisi, Cornovii, Ordovices, Dumnonii, Damnonii, Carvetii, Caledonii and an unknown Irish tribe in the north (most likely the Darini tribe). There is also DNA evidence these ties extended into Sweden, Scandinavia and Brittany. This would be when Ireland was called Eire. There are definitely more tribes that belong to this confederation yet to be discovered..

It is my belief (based on historical records) that the Brigantes were part of a larger confederation of ancient Celtic tribes that united against the invasion of the Roman Empire, and various invasions after the Romans, such as the Saxons and Jutes.

My mtDNA comes from the Norman region of France, and is also Viking in origin, as my haplogroup has been found circa 1000CE in Sweden through archaeology, and likely originates from Rollo’s invasion of France.[4]

DNA Confirmations

  • Paternal relationship is confirmed through Y-chromosome DNA testing. Joshua Stewart, FTDNA kit #944382, and his 4th cousin once removed, Claude Stewart FTDNA kit # 900219, match at a genetic distance of 2 on 67 markers thereby confirming their direct paternal lines back to their MCRA, Charles Stewart (1761-1842) . FTDNA indicates that the probability the two share a common ancestor within the last 6 generations is 87.16% and within the last 7 generations is 91.73%.

  • Little Peedee River was sometimes called Drowning Creek. In later years, after maps were revised, the name seemed to apply only to the upper course of Lumber (Indian, Lumbee) River. Charles20 Stuart (Elizabeth19, Patrick18, Alexander17, Patrick16), born about 1775 in Cumberland or Robeson County, North Carolina, apparently was living with his mother in Robeson County when the census of 1790 was taken. He and Thomas Carraway of Cumberland county bought Aug, 20, 1800, of James Stuart of Adams County, Mississippi Territory, for $2000, 960 acres of land in Robeson County in various tracts -- 300 acres on the upper or south side of Drowning Creek which John Cole had conveyed Jan. 9, 1779, "to James Stuart, Senr., father of the above-named James"; 300 acres on the north side of Ashpole Swamp at a branch called the Mill Branch which John Cole had conveyed Jan. 9, 1779, to James Stuart, sr.; 160 acres on the north side of Ashpole swamp which Jesse Boward had sold Sep. 17, 1777, to James Stuart, sr.; 100 acres on the west side of Drowning Creek* and on the north side of Ashpole Swamp, granted Nov. 12, 1779, to James Stuart, sr., and adjoining the other tract; 100 acres on the east side of Ashpole swamp on the Bane Island, granted Nov. 11, 1779, to James Stuart, sr., adjoining his other tract; and 100 acres on the east side of Ashpole Swamp granted Oct. 10, 1787,+ to James Stuart, sr. The witnesses to the deed were James Carraway, Hugh McLachlan and C. S. Carraway, the last evidently being Charles Stewart Carraway, protégé of his grandfather, Patrick Stewart. Charles, signing his name Charles G. Stuart, and Thomas Carraway of Cumberland County deeded May 2, 1801, three of these tracts -- 300 acres -- to Giles Williams for $1000, and deeded the other three tracts -- 360 acres -- to Absalom Williams for $1000, the witnesses to both deeds being George Moore and Benjamin Lee. It is highly probable that Charles Stuart, Thomas Carraway and William Jordan, accompanied by the aging Elizabeth Stuart, then moved to Montgomery County, Tennessee
The Old Stewart Cemetery is located between North Carolina Highway 210 and the South River near the intersection with U.S. Highway 701. The cemetery site consisted of a low brick rubble wall which was originally a triangular shape. On May 3, 1995 the site was inspected by Mark Wilde-Ramsing and Catherine Sloan and was found to be in poor repair but with evidence of the original wall. No grave stones were apparent.
