Research Notes

Tony Varey writes (March 2017):

First the full biographical entry for James Stewart in the Stewart Clan Magazine of December 1923 Vol II, No 6 :

JAMES STEWART, born Oct. 8,1664, in Newbury, married about 1687 Elizabeth ——, who was the mother of all his children. His name appears on the Newbury tax-list of 1688. He served from that town in the Canada exped- ition of 1690. He is first mentioned in the Rowley records in 1693: his wife was admitted to the Rowley church on Oct. 20, 1695, and he was baptized and admitt- ed on Feb. 12,1698-9. From 1709 to 1723 they lived on the John Pickard farm in Boxford [Essex deeds, 69:192], attending church in Bradford. On their return to Rowley about 1723 they located in that part of Rowley now Georgetown. There Elizabeth died and was “buried in Bradford” Oct. 28, 1732. James married (2) June 25, 1733, Sarah Prime, daughter of Samuel Prime. She died Dec. 29, 1747, and he died Sep. 17,1750, in Rowley. Now concerning his wife Elizabeth:

We know from the Stewart Clan Magazine that James Stewart (son of Duncan) born 1664 married an “Elizabeth ------“ in about 1687 – the year before her first child James.

It has been stated on many Ancestry.com family trees and on Wikitree that James Stewart’s wife Elizabeth was an Elizabeth Cash. However, there is much confusion on this matter.

On Wikitree there have been two profiles for her, attached to James: Cash-297 (profile manager Jerry Kezar) Cash-341 (profile manager George Kellogg).

They have both said that she was born 19 July 1667. And that her parents were William Cash and Sarah Flinder. However, William and Sarah were born in 1668 and 1670 respectively, and their marriage is recorded as having taken place in 1693. However, they did indeed have a daughter Elizabeth, but born 19 July 1696 (see below). So clearly this is not her.

However, there are not one but two Elizabeth Cashes in the births:

  • Salem Births record (Massachusetts, Town and Vital records 1620-1988:

CASH, Elizabeth, d. twin, William and Elizabeth (Lambert), July 10, 1672. ct. il Eliz[abeth], d. W[ilia]m and Sarah (Flinder), July 19, 1696.

(all already on Wikitree)

So could this earlier Elizabeth (b. 1672) (currently appearing in Wikitree as Cash-59 and the sister of the William married to Sarah Flinder) be James Stewart's wife, married to him in 1687? She would have to be about 15, so it looks doubtful.

And in any event we have two marriages for two Elizabeths in the Salem marriages, 1692 and 1697, both good marriage dates for the Elizabeth born 1672. However, it has not been possible to identify which marriage applies to Elizabeth born 1672, and Wikitree does not specify.

Here are the two marriages:

  • Elizabeth Cash

in the American Marriages Before 1699 Name: Elizabeth Cash Spouse: Edwin Bishop (more probably Edward, as in many references) Marriage Date: 9 Mar 1692 Marriage Place: Salem, Massachusetts

  • Elizabeth Cash

in the Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988 Name: Elizabeth Cash Event Type: Marriage Marriage Date: 7 Mar 1697 Marriage Place: Salem, Massachusetts Spouse Name: William Tapley

  • Salem Marriages

The full list of Salem “Cash” marriages does actually contain a third Elizabeth from the era, who indeed marries a James Stuart – but not til 1714. Could this be James and Elizabeth’s son, their first born in 1688? He would be 26 by that time…

CASH, Christian, and Clifford Crowningsheild, Jan. 6. 1736-7* Eliza[beth], and Edward Bishop, Mar. 9, 1692-3. ct. r. Eliz[abeth]. and William Tapley, Mar. 7, 1697. [Mar. 7, 1698-9. ct. a 3] Eliza[beth]. and James Stuart, int. Apr. 17, 1714. Elizabeth, and George Trafford, July 23. 1811* Hester, and Joseph Flanders, Aug. 5, 1700. John, and Sarah Neal. Here’s the record of Elizabeth marrying a James Stuart, 17 April 1714

  • Elizabeth Cash

in the Massachusetts, Compiled Marriages, 1633-1850 Name: Elizabeth Cash Gender: Female Spouse: James Stuart Marriage Date: 17 Apr 1714 City: Salem County: Essex Source: Family History Library, Salt Lake City, UT, Film # 0761210.

It would be reasonable to conclude that our James Stewart born 1664 did not marry a Cash, and for Wikitree to reflect this, and that perhaps his son did marry a Cash.

James (b. 1664) should therefore be shown as married to “Elizabeth Unknown” and for any connections between him and the Elizabeth Cashes (-341 and -297) to be severed.

These two Cash profiles have been amended to reflect this and should now be merged.

The family trees on Ancestry seem terribly confused, mixing up the Jameses and the Elizabeths also, and so should therefore be ignored.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
