Alexander was born in Auchinleck, Scotland in 1895, the son of Alexander Stewart, a coalminer and his wife Sarah, nee Mallin.
Alexander grew up at Coal Rd, Auchinleck and was a coal miner at time of marriage (1921). He continued to work as a coal miner until retiring from High House Colliery in 1960.
He had been on the committee for Achinleck Talbot Football Club when they won the Scottish Junior Cup (date unknown). He was a lifetime member of the Independent Order of Rechabites, collecting subscriptions and serving as an executive member. He was also on the Board of Management for the local Co-operative Society from 1951 until at least 1971.
In 1971 he was living with Elsie at 25 Heathfield Rd, Auchinleck. He and Elsie celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary at the Railway Hotel in Auchinleck in 1971 - daughter Chris Watson and family returned from Australia to attend.
In retirement he enjoyed gardening.
At the time of his death he had been living at 6 William McComb Court, Auchinleck in Ayrshire.
