David Stewart was born on 25 April 1892 in Dunedin, New Zealand. He was the son of Walter Stewart and his wife Annie Palmer.

He was working as a painter in Dannevirke prior to enlisting in the army on 14 August 1914 at Masterton, shortly after the outbreak of World War One. He had previously military experience, having served with the Otago Rifles for three years.

David was a private in the Wellington Regiment of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He embarked with his regiment for Egypt on 14 October 1914, arriving on 3 December 1914. In mid-April 1915, David deployed with his regiment to the Greek island of Lemnos in final preparation for the Gallipoli campaign, which commenced on 25 April 1915.

Less than three weeks into the campaign, on 12 May 1915, it was reported that David had been admitted sometime previously to the HMS Southland with gunshot wounds to his face and eyes.

On 26 May 1915, he was admitted to the 1st Australian Stationary Hospital on Lemnos, suffering from enteric fever. He was transferred to the 15th Stationary Hospital on 3 July 1915.

David died of enteric fever on 4 July 1915 (aged 23 years) at the 15th Stationary Hospital at Mudros, on Lemnos. He was buried at the East Mudros Military Cemetery on Lemnos.
