Andrew Jackson was the son of Moses Stice and Elizabeth Marsh Stice, one of 11 children to this couple.
He was born 10 FEB 1849 in Scotland County, Missouri, USA. (one researcher on ancestry.com has Jackson, Livingston, Missouri, USA for the place of his birth).
He was a native of Missouri and crossed the plains with ox team and covered wagon in 1851 in a long train of which his father was captain. The family first located near Elmira, Solano County, but after a few years moved to Napa County. It was here he grew to manhood, engaged in farming.
When his health began to decline, he went to Arizona and there engaged in farming. He grew strong and robust and while in Arizona for 20 years had charge of an Indian reservation for the government for 12 of those years. About 6 years prior to his death, he sold his interests in Arizona and returned to Napa Valley to make his home with his only sister, Mrs. Harris.
He married to Adelidie E Thomas (1862–1936) prior to 1881 in California. They had three daughters.
His three children, Mrs. Vivian Yates and Mrs. Letty Spencer, of Cold Springs, Nevada and Mrs. Margaret Lemmon of Los Angeles.
Andrew Stice and his wife Adelaide Thomas Stice came to Hemet-San Jacinto Valley in the early days settling in San Jacinto long before there was any city of Hemet. They knew many of the early settlers and Adelaide was considered an authority on California history. [1]
He and his wife divorced in Jan 1900. [2]
He was a California pioneer of 1851, and a resident of Napa Valley for many years.
Before his death, he had charge of the work on his sister's farm in Napa Valley, California. About 10 days before his death he sustained a stroke of apoplexy and failed rapidly to the end.
He died at the home of his only living sister, Mrs. Lurinda Harris, on Silverado Trail, Sunday, the 12th of April 1925 at the age of 76 years. He had been in very rugged health before his death.
His funeral was held at the Christian Church in Napa and interment in St. Helena cemetery. [3]
Another version of the story of their migration to California.
A. J./ Andrew Jackson STICE the 11th of the 12 children of Moses and Levina (March) STICE. In his biography in ILLUSTRATED HISTORY of SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA pub 1890 p. 162-163 States "He came to California with his father, mother and family, in 1857. There were about 100 wagons, and his brother Bluford, having crossed before, was captain of the company. Mr Stice and family came direct to Napa valley, arriving in October, and bought the 'Old Mill' farm of 300 acres, where he remained until 1860, when he sold out and went to Solano County, where he bought a farm of 160 acres."
