Biography

Flag of Cornwall (St Piran's Cross, pre-1838)
James Stick was born in Cornwall, England.
James Stick came free to the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

James Stick was born on 7th February 1864, the son of Thomas Stick a farmer and Elizabeth (Dyer) Stick. His birth certificate cites that he was born at Great Skewes, St Wenn, Cornwall [1] James was baptised at St Wenn on 28th July 1864 age 5 months . [2]

At the time of the 1871 census, James was aged 7, [3] living at Belowda, Roche, Cornwall, England with both of his parents and his brothers and sisters. Aged 17 at the time of the 1881 census, James can be found employed as an apprentice. [4] living at 133 Lambeth Walk, Lambeth, Surrey [5]. In 1883, aged 19, James left England with his brother Nicholas Stick aged 22 and emigrated to Australia, on the Liguria, arriving in Victoria in November 1883. [6]

In March 1888 there was a "New Store" opened in Ulmarra. Messrs. Harcourt, Stick and Co. have commenced business in the premises lately erected by Mr Niland. This "Mr Niland" would have been Andrew Niland who later became the father in law of James. [7]

James married Mary Jane (Jennie) Niland on 11th June 1889 at the residence of his bride's parents which was Bank Cottage in Ulmarra. [8] On the same day and at the same location James' friend Arthur Harcourt, an emigrant from Norwich in Norfolk, married Julia (Cissie)Niland who was James' sister in law in a double wedding. [9]

In 1890 there was a flood in Ulmarra when the river rose over the floor of the public wharf, by at least 8 feet. Many towns people suffered loss of household goods. It was reported that James Stick & Co (the name of James's company) suffered "a heavy loss". [10]

Whilst living in Ulmarra, James was associated with the commercial life of the Clarence (river area) for a number of years, and prior to starting business at Ramornie was a member of the firm of Harcourt and Stick, of Ulmarra. In 1888 James and his associate Arthur Harcourt were both granted Hawker's licences. [11] In February 1899, the firm went under the name "James Stick & Co" when Arthur Harcourt disposed of all of his interests in the firm. [12]

James passed away on Saturday 27th May 1905 at the age of 41 years. [13] He died of pleurosy. His passing was marked with a very respectful write up in the Clarence and Richmond Examiner, Grafton. He was described as a "straightout, honest businessman" [14][14] Family notices were also posted. His wife's Jennie notice can be read: [15] [16]

The grave for James can be found at Ramornie Cemetery Ramornie Works, Clarence Valley Council, New South Wales, Australia.
