About 1810 they migrated to Russell, New York and it was there that most of their ten children were born. About 1829-30 the family set out for the west probably traveling via Erie Canal to Detroit. Congress had authorized the construction of the Territorial Road to Chicago across Michigan and they took it. They settled in Calhoun County where he along with others laid out a new settlement. He laid out a farm and apparently was a successful farmer. He liked a Congregational minister who came to visit the new settlement and persuaded him to stay building up a congregation and a church building.
