Biography

Flora (Stillwell) Raynes lived in Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand.

Flora Alice Stillwell was born in 1856. A birth record has not been located, but in an affidavit completed by her when her husband died she stated she had been born in Auckland. She was the daughter of John & Mary Ann Stillwell.

She married Audus Raynes, a hotelier and storekeeper, in 1872 in Auckland. Flora would only have been about 16 years old, and her husband was 23. They had a son, Joseph Audus Raynes, who was born on 31 October 1872 when they were in Lyttleton.

Flora acquired 5 acres of land at Kaihu in 1891. Her husband operated the Kaihu Hotel while they were living in Northland.

Flora's husband bought and sold several hotels during their marriage. For a time they also lived at Mauku where he had bought a farm (Wellwood), but then returned to Takapuna in Auckland, where they lived at Rose Cottage until he died in 1927.

Flora survived her husband by about 25 years and died in 1954. Flora was 97 years old. She is buried in O'Neill's Point Cemetery in Auckland - interment taking place on 18 May 1954.
