Biography

Nicholas Stillwell Sr. was born on 2 Oct 1570 in Dorking, Surrey, England [1] to parents John Stillwell and Jane Parle. He married Alice Holmes in 1595 in Dorking, England. Children: Mabel, Elizabeth, John, Emma, Edmond, Nicholas Jr., Jasper. He died on 13 May 1647 in Dorking, Surrey, England.

"The Collickmoor Farm is an historic Stillwell residence located south and west of Dorking. It has gone by several names, including Colletmoor, Collopmore, Collet Moor, and other sound-similar names. It is now (2008) the residence of M J Shiers. It is named Collickmoor Farmhouse and is at Logmore Lane, Dorking, Surrey. Nicholas and his wife Alice resided on the farm rearing their 4 children. Nicholas was born in 1570 and passed away in 1647 in Surrey England.

Some of his children (John, his son, (Hayden, p 146), Jasper, his son, John Cooke, his sister, Mabel's son, Nicholas Jr, his son and two of his sons, Nicholas III, and Richard in 1638)[2]came to New Amsterdam in 1640. The Stillwells eventually settled at Graves End on Long Island with the Lady Moody colonists. His son, Lt. Nicholas Stillwell, Jr. commanded forces against the Indians in Virginia and later aided Governor Claybourne in Maryland. He owned one of the original 20-acre farms at Graves End and eventually resided on 200 acres near Graves End. He was a lieutenant and commander in charge of the expedition against the Indians in the Esopus war. After completing that mission successfully he returned to New Amsterdam and served as a friend and confident of Gov. Peter Stuyvesant, the last of the Dutch governors before the English takeover of New Amsterdam.

His grandson, Capt. Nicholas Stillwell, commanded the King's County contingent of men against the French and the Indians in 1693. (Source: Genealogical and Family History of the Wyoming and Lackawanna Valleys, Pennsylvania, vol. II, pp146-147.)"

The Dorking parish register has no record of a marriage of Nicholas Stillwell and Alice Holmes in 1595 or any other date. It has a record of a Nicholas Stillwell marrying an Elisbeth Peeters on 1 November 1596.

The Dorking parish register has no record of the birth of a Nicholas Stillwell (jr) to Nicholas Stillwell. Nicholas Stillwell (not a jr) was born in Puttenham Surrey to William Stillwell and his wife Jane Curtis on 1 February 1605/6. Parish Register Puttenham St John the Baptist/ 1562-1763 [1]

Since Mabel, John and Emma Stillwell were born (according to the Dorking register) before the marriage (as given here) of Nicholas to either Alice Holmes or Elisbeth Peeters, there must either be another Nicholas Stillwell or an earlier marriage before 1586. For the Nicholas Stillwell born in 1570 to have a child born in 1586 is stretching the limits of probability.

I modified the biography again. I hope it now satisfies all.

The paragraph that refers to the commanded of the forces against the indians was Lt. Nicholas Stillwell Jr., not Senior. I do not see any problem with the information and dates. It does not say that Sr. came to Virginia, only that "Family members" came to New Amsterdam.

The dates for Lt Nicholas Stillwell Sr don't add up. If he was born in 1570 in England and died 1647 in England, how could he have emigrated in 1640 and commanded forces against the Indians in Virginia? He would have been 70 yrs old and then went back to England to die? The paragraph below states son Capt. Nicholas fought against the French and Indians. I don't believe the Lt. emigrated, his son did.
Stillwell-449 and Stillwell-151 appear to represent the same person because: I was working on the younger profile due to the Clean A Thon, followed some sources which I added and realized after adding Jr's wife that it's the same person.
Stillwell-449 and Stillwell-151 are not ready to be merged because: Too little data to compare
