Biography

James Stephenson Stinson[1]

According to the Swan's Island website:

James Stevenson Stinson Sr. was born in June 1679 in Ballaghema County, Tyrone, Ireland. He died on 9 February 1758 at the age of 78. Year of death also reported as 1749/50. He was buried in Potters Mill cemetery at Arrowsic. Came to America and Maine about 1729. Jane Gilmore and James Stevenson Stinson Sr. were married about 1705 in Ireland.

Jane Gilmore was born in 1680. She died on 20 February 1755 at the age of 75. She was buried in Potters Mill cemetery at Arrowsic. [Maine]

From my personal research in a visit to the Georgetown Historical Society in Georgetown Maine, "James Stinson" and wife "Jane Stinson" are buried in the section of the "Woolwich Cemeteries" known as the James Stinson Burying Ground, having died on Feb 9, 1758 and Feb 20, 1755, respectively. (from an excel spreadsheet provided by the Georgetown Historical Society with all the recorded graves in the Woolwich Cemeteries, several thousand).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

I am trying to find the grand parents of Thomas Stinson. Thomas' father appears to be James Stevenson Stinson (and his mother Jane Gilmore), and there seems to be a good record of that in Maine. Although several sites suggest that James' parents are George Stimpson and Alice (Phillips) Stimpson, I question this. George Stimpson was born in Ipswich, MA in 1641, and it seems strange that he and Alice (also born in Ipswich, 1660; they married in 1676, also in Ipswich) would have gone to Ireland where James was born in 1679.
